Following the presentation of the BMW i3 Concept and BMW i8 Concept, the BMW Group introduces the BMW i8 Spyder Concept to the mix. This third BMW i model embodies the future of cutting-edge and emotionally appealing mobility concepts. Its sporting design headlines the qualities of an open-top two-seater blending lightness, dynamic capability and efficiency with a very special aesthetic allure.

The combination of intelligent lightweight design and state-of-the-art hybrid technology imbues the BMW i8 Spyder Concept with genuine sports car performance, yet its fuel consumption is no higher than you would expect from a small car.

Among the most eye-catching features of the BMW i8 Spyder Concept are the upward-swivelling, windowless doors and a range of purpose-oriented on-board equipment including electric kickboards stowed under a transparent tailgate. The sports car is based around the innovative LifeDrive architecture, itself underpinned by a lightweight modular construction and the use of high-quality high-tech materials. The BMW i8 Spyder Concept is a plug-in hybrid powered by an eDrive drivetrain combining a high-performance electric motor and petrol combustion engine. The lithium-ion battery supplying the motor with power can be recharged in an extremely short space of time from any domestic power socket. Together, the car's minimised weight, low centre of gravity and finely judged balance, coupled with a combined system output of up to 260 kW (354 hp), promise unbeatable dynamic capability, exceptional efficiency and unbridled driving pleasure.

Barely a year after the unveiling of the 2+2-seater BMW i8 Concept, BMW i is presenting the second variant of this innovative hybrid sports car, a machine designed to light up the path to compelling and purpose-oriented mobility. Like its Coupe sibling, the emotionally charged BMW i8 Spyder Concept combines intelligent lightweight design with the leading-edge drivetrain technology eDrive, while its open-top two-seater construction delivers an even more intense driving experience. This is a car in which outstanding performance potential goes hand-in-hand with extremely low fuel consumption and emissions.

Compared with the Coupe variant of the BMW i8 Concept, the BMW i8 Spyder Concept has a slightly shorter wheelbase and overall length. With its compact dimensions and distinctive exterior paintwork, the sports car exudes a feeling of dynamism before it so much as turns a wheel, while striking features of its design include upward-swivelling, windowless doors and a transparent glass panel at the rear. Underneath this cover two electric kickboards are stowed, providing a visual showcase for the fun factor in mobility and adding another layer to the car's recreational appeal. Inside, a revised material and colour concept provides an extra dose of sportiness. Like the Coupe, the BMW i8 Spyder Concept with eDrive is a high-performance plug-in hybrid, and it fuses the specific advantages of an electric motor and combustion engine to optimum effect. Exceptional efficiency and dynamic capability are the upshot.


Modular LifeDrive architecture offers a preview of the future

Like the Coupe, the BMW i8 Spyder Concept is also built around the innovative LifeDrive architecture, a fusion of independent functional units. For example, the carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) Life module gives the car an extremely lightweight passenger cell, while the Drive modules - made primarily from aluminium components - bring together all the car's operational driving functions, such as the powertrain, chassis and safety structure. Impressively extensive use of high-tech materials allows this innovative concept to chart new territory in terms of weight minimisation, structural rigidity and crash safety. This is good news not only for the car's dynamic performance, but also for its range and fuel economy. Intelligent lightweight design, encompassing the use of innovative materials, has allowed the unavoidable additional weight of the high-output hybrid drivetrain to be cancelled out in full. Plus, the LifeDrive architecture has been carefully adapted to the sports car character of the BMW i8 Spyder Concept. The front and rear axle modules are connected by an "energy tunnel", which houses the hybrid battery. This allows the engineers to give the car a low centre of gravity and ideal balance.

The distinctive two-way split of the LifeDrive concept is also reflected in the car's design, which renders the basic elements of the body clearly distinguishable. Expressive surfaces and precise lines create a harmonious transition from one module into another. This overlap and interlocking of surfaces and lines - "layering" in BMW i speak - is displayed both on the body and in the interior of the new car.


Latest interpretation of the BMW i design language

The BMW i8 Spyder Concept's emotion-led design vividly spotlights the car's qualities, with lightness, dynamic capability and efficiency highlighted to particularly prominent effect. For example, the two-seater embodies the perfect synthesis of technology and aesthetic appeal, and exudes unbridled driving pleasure even when stationary. Key to creating this impression of sporty dynamics are large body panels, a hunkered-down stance and numerous aerodynamic elements such as contact surfaces, spoiler lips, AirCurtains and aeroflaps. These features substantially reduce the hybrid car's Cd and enhance both efficiency and range.


Dynamic front end

The front end offers a particularly revealing window into the open-top two-seater's dynamic talent. One defining element is the headlights with pioneering laser light technology, which follow the hallmark BMW i U-shaped design template. A semi-transparent "V" opens out from the front end of the flat bonnet towards the windscreen and beckons the eye to the electric motor below. A spoiler lip positioned on the windscreen frame guides the airflow over the heads of the passengers. And for journeys when the weather cannot quite be trusted, the planned two-section folding roof might well come in handy.


Athletic silhouette

Short front and rear overhangs and a low-slung silhouette define the side view of the BMW i8 Spyder Concept and underline its athletic character. Alluring lines and forms generate a strong forward-surging stance even before the car powers off the line. The doors, which open by pivoting forwards around the A-pillar axis, further enhance the BMW i8 Spyder Concept's emotional impact. Below the doors, the side skirts create a powerful wedge shape which opens out towards the rear. At the same time, the open-top two-seater cuts a light and flowing figure and appears as if carved from a single mould.


Striking rear

Like the front end, the rear also sits low to the road. Its headline feature is a transparent cover revealing the two folded electric kickboards accommodated below. Adopting the hallmarks of BMW i design, the kickboards are perfect for relaxed cruising along promenades and paths or around city squares. There can be few more attractive advertisements for individual mobility. A visually imposing rear diffuser, three-dimensional air outlets and the U-shaped rear lights give the BMW i8 Spyder Concept an extremely wide appearance and emphasise its sporting credentials.


Functional aesthetics: layering in the interior

The interior of the BMW i8 Spyder Concept is defined by three levels showcasing its various functions. As with the car's body, the interlocking of surfaces and lines is also one of the stand-out features of the interior design. The outer layer frames the supporting structure, while the inner "comfort" layer comprises seat surfaces and stowage compartments. The cockpit fills the third "technical" layer, bringing together the instrument panel, steering column and steering wheel with the instrument cluster, central information display and control elements. The prominent driver focus of the cockpit and the low seating position, which adds further depth to the open-top two-seater's credibility, are particularly eye-catching. All the controls are in just the right position and, like the other functional components of the interior, designed to further enliven the driving experience. An 8.8-inch (22.4 cm) screen displays all the relevant driving information in three-dimensional, high-resolution quality.

The colour and materials concept also provides some stand-out touches. The Spyder's interior is defined by a mixture of plastic, carbon and leather, with the off-white of the outer layer and the bold orange tone of the naturally tanned leather generating a sporting atmosphere rich in contrast. The cockpit and centre console also show slight modifications over the Coupe. The overall effect of the interior is one of quality, purity and emotional appeal.


Plug-in hybrid: the perfect alliance of dynamic capability and efficiency

Like the Coupe, the BMW i8 Spyder Concept with eDrive is a plug-in hybrid combining two different power sources and employing the specific advantages of its electric motor and combustion engine to optimum effect. The hybrid drivetrain's key components gel together with outstanding smoothness, allowing it to offer peerless dynamic capability and maximum efficiency. In other words, the open-top two-seater produces the performance of an out-and-out sports machine yet posts the fuel economy of a small car.

The 96 kW (131 hp) electric motor on the front axle works in tandem with a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine sending 164 kW (223 hp) through the rear wheels. Both units are in-house BMW Group developments and generate an aggregate system output of 260 kW (354 hp) and peak torque of 550 Newton metres. That is enough to accelerate the BMW i8 Spyder Concept from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in five seconds on the way to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). Despite this performance, the two-seater burns just three litres of petrol per 100 kilometres (equivalent to fuel economy of 94 mpg imp) in the European test cycle.

The electric motor sources its energy from a lithium-ion battery which can be fully charged from a domestic power socket in less than two hours. The high-output battery is located in the energy tunnel between the front and rear axle modules in order to keep the car's centre of gravity as low as possible - and therefore to maximise the car's dynamic performance. The space-saving and well-balanced packaging of this and other drive and chassis components gives the sporting two-seater ideal 50:50 weight distribution.

With its battery fully charged, the BMW i8 Spyder Concept can cover up to 30 kilometres (19 miles) on electric power alone. As such, far from filling in as a bit-part player, the electric motor plays a role equal to that of the petrol engine. If required, a high-voltage alternator hooked up to the combustion engine generates extra power, which is then stored in the hybrid battery. This range-extending function during the course of a journey allows the two-seater to travel further between charging stations.

Another special feature of the BMW i8 Spyder Concept is the ability to send power through the front, rear or all four wheels at the same time. Intelligent control electronics ensure that the optimum drive configuration is available for the situation at hand. The driver can view the driving mode currently engaged and monitor the activity of the two drive sources on the large information display in the cockpit. Furthermore, the electronic systems ensure maximum energy recuperation under braking or when coasting. All of which means that the driver can enjoy maximum dynamic performance, unbeatable directional stability and minimal consumption and emissions at all times.


Connectivity: the perfect link between mobile living environments

BMW i sums up the idea of mobility geared to the demands of the future and the needs of its customers. To this end, BMW i drivers will have a new generation of driver assistance systems at their disposal which significantly enhance both safety and comfort. For example, the camera-based proactive Collision Warning system, Parking Assistant and Traffic Jam Assistant ensure all on board can enjoy a safe and relaxed journey.

In addition, BMW i is developing an array of innovative connectivity functions which provide a seamless link between its models and their owners' lives outside the car. Remote functions accessed via a smartphone help users to locate their car in large car parks (CarFinder), show nearby charging stations, allow the battery to be charged at pre-set times and inform drivers on the current status of their vehicle. Plus, the battery and interior can be brought up to peak operating temperature before the driver sets off on a journey. The Last Mile Navigation function, meanwhile, assists drivers after they have parked their car, with route instructions transferred directly onto their smartphone directing them along the last leg of their journey on foot - to a museum or restaurant, for example. And the Intermodal Route Planning function effectively integrates the car into the local public transport network and provides information on current parking availability at the driver's destination.


Interface design aids intelligent mobility

Two large displays inside the BMW i8 Spyder Concept make up the interface between the car, its passengers and the outside world. Positioned alongside the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, the central information display flags up all relevant information and assists the driver in the use of connectivity applications. A third display shows the automatic climate control settings currently engaged. All the screens display their information in 3D, and the cutting-edge, visually appealing graphics are also impressively clear.


Instrument cluster

The instrument cluster displays important driving data using two variable-form ellipses. Positioned alongside the digital speedometer, the efficiency display allows drivers to view how much energy they are currently using - or recovering through the recuperation process. Added to which, the display also contains extra navigation details and information on the car's range when running purely on electric power, its range when powered by the combustion engine alone and its range using both power units in tandem. If the driver switches to energy-saving ECO PRO mode, the display turns blue in colour to signal the shift in functional emphasis, and the ellipses now also vary in form. By the same token, moving into SPORT mode treats the driver to an emotional orange hue. As well as the changes in colour, the displays also provide information tailored to the driving mode selected and to assisting the driver as effectively as possible.


Central information display

The central information display in the BMW i8 Spyder Concept makes a key contribution to intelligent mobility. It allows the driver to view the current status of the hybrid system, provides a platform for menu navigation and route guidance, and uses innovative connectivity functions to offer drivers a gateway into their lives outside the car. This ensures drivers remain up to speed at all times on how the combustion engine and electric motor are being used, while also being able to monitor the energy flow within the system.


Forward-thinking analysis of the driving situation

The car's power electronics are linked up to intelligent navigation and traffic guidance systems to enable the hybrid drive system to work at maximum efficiency. In this way, information on route profile, speed limits and unavoidable traffic congestion are incorporated into the calculations of the energy management system so that the hybrid system's operating strategy can be adapted accordingly. For example, proactive charging of the hybrid battery allows the BMW i8 Spyder Concept to negotiate a traffic tailback on the road ahead using electric power alone - and therefore without producing any emissions. In addition, handy displays such as fuel consumption history allow interesting reflections on past journeys and help to optimise the driving style of the individual at the wheel.


Perfectly prepared at all times thanks to diary synchronisation

Intelligent connectivity functions open the door to a host of other practical solutions when it comes to preparing the BMW i8 Spyder Concept for its daily workload. One example of this is automatic diary synchronisation with the driver's smartphone. The system registers upcoming appointments and, when plugged into a power socket, ensures that the battery is topped up overnight so that the car is ready for action with a fully charged battery the following morning.

The BMW i8 Spyder Concept follows in the tyre tracks of the BMW i3 Concept and BMW i8 Concept Coupe as the third concept car created under the BMW i sub-brand.

Sustainability plays a paramount role in the BMW i concept. It is an issue that runs like a thread throughout the value chain - all the way from purchasing, through development and production to sales and marketing. And when it comes to the efficient manufacturing of its vehicles, BMW i goes a step further still.

The Leipzig production plant will see an additional 70 per cent reduction in water use and 50 per cent drop in energy consumption per vehicle over the years ahead. And the energy that is used will be sourced 100 per cent from renewable sources.

The 2012 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este will once again host a spectacular world premiere and, in so doing, build on its tradition as a gathering of the industry's leading coachbuilders. The premiere in question will see the time-honoured Milanese coachbuilder Zagato team up with BMW to unveil the result of a unique collaboration: the BMW Zagato Coupé.

Zagato has worked in close collaboration to create an exciting and emotionally charged coupé in the finest tradition of automotive workmanship. The BMW Zagato Coupé embodies the unbridled fascination of cars and fuses the design DNA of the two companies into a fresh and desinctive whole. This one-off model is the product of many hours of skilled hand-craftsmanship and breathes new life into the tradition of coachbuilding.

It is hard to think of a better occasion for the premiere than the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, one of the most exclusive events in the world of classic cars and motorcycles. The vehicles shown on the banks of Lake Como are hand-picked, the number of entrants limited and the surroundings simply without comparison. The Concorso began as a get-together of coachbuilders presenting one-off hand-built creations, and the BMW Zagato Coupé follows very much in that tradition.

Made for the road.

The two partners settled on a realistic and applied approach to the development of the BMW Zagato Coupé. "Zagato has always provided its customers with ready-to-drive cars which can be sent into action on the road or race track without further ado - and the BMW Zagato Coupé fits the same template," says Dr Andrea Zagato, who represents the third generation of his family to sit at the helm of the company. To this end, the car is registered for road use and meets all the legal requirements worldwide. "It is relatively easy to build a design study which is not intended for use on the road. Not having to meet any stipulations governing crash safety or pedestrian protection opens up a host of new avenues in terms of design," he adds. "The challenge lies in injecting the emotional appeal of a concept car into a road-legal machine. And we think we have succeeded in doing just that with the BMW Zagato Coupé." Indeed, the new creation has already cut a "bella figura" at high speeds during testing on the BMW test track.

Both partners can look back on a rich heritage, sharing as they do a passion for cars that stretches back over 80 years. Added to which, Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice-President BMW Group Design, and Andrea Zagato are long-time appreciators of each other's work; indeed, Zagato took home the prestigious Concorso d'Eleganza Design Award in both 2010 and 2011. However, this collaboration is about more than mutual respect.

Zagato chief designer Norihiko Harada and van Hooydonk have been friends for many years, so when Andrea Zagato proposed a collaboration, it wasn't long before the decision was made to build a car at Zagato that embodies the two companies' passion for cars.

BMW and the Italian design.

After sawing in 1939 the creation of the first BMWs sporting tailor made Italian metalwork, a coupé based on the BMW 328 for the upcoming race season and specifically for the Mille Miglia (where it triumphed in 1940), BMW was back to Milan in 1954 to buy from Renzo Rivolta, founder of ISO, drawings, license and tooling necessary for the production of the legendary Isetta.

Almost sixty years later BMW had the opportunity to re-establish a connection with the Rivolta family. As a matter of fact Marella Rivolta, wife of Andrea Zagato, is Zagato Art Director and responsible of BMW Coupé Zagato trim and colours.

The hands of Italian designers were also responsible for the eye-catching looks of the BMW 3200 Michelotti Vignale (1959), BMW 700 (1959), BMW 3200 CS Bertone (1962) and BMW M1 (1978) - all of which retain the status of design icons to this day.

The BMW Zagato Coupé heralds a new chapter in the tradition of cooperation between BMW and Italian designers. Much has changed since those earlier collaborations, however, with the advent of new working methods such as digital sketching, Photoshop and CAD/CAS tools opening the door to an entirely new way of working. Despite these advances in the design tools available, the human touch is still essential to the process. "Working with Zagato was a fantastic experience. It was extremely enriching for us to create something with people who share our understanding of good design and passion for cars," explains Karim Habib, Head of Design BMW Automobiles. "And that is what makes the car so special - the open and constructive dialogue with Zagato, their experience, craftsmanship and incomparable sense for forms. All of these gifts are wrapped up in the BMW Zagato Coupé."

The body of the BMW Zagato Coupé has been built entirely by hand. As in the past, the new skin was tailored to fit the car's mechanical architecture, tracing its lines yet giving it space to breathe. The Zagato experts spent many hours crafting the aluminium sheet metal by hand and meticulously moulding it to give the car its unique form.

The design - a BMW seen through the eyes of Zagato.

The BMW Zagato Coupé is a collaboration between auto enthusiasts - a BMW seen through the eyes of Zagato. This comes through in the design of the car, hallmark design cues from both companies merging to form an emotion-laden coupé in the best Zagato tradition. The brief for the car was clear from the outset: the BMW Zagato Coupé was to be a "Vmax concept", a road-registered, aerodynamically optimised machine capable of achieving high speeds yet at the same time meeting all legal requirements and crash-related stipulations - a car that is ready and eager to be driven.

The proportions of the BMW Zagato Coupé alone exude the promise of a very special driving experience. The extremely long bonnet, greenhouse set well back and double bubble roof and Kamm Tail sum up the dynamic focus of the car as only a coupé could. The flowing roofline melts away into the compact, muscular rear, where the car's power is transferred to the road. This sculptural and visually striking surface treatment is a Zagato hallmark and lends the BMW Zagato Coupé a distinctive and instantly recognisable personality. The surface treatment, on the other hand, is clearly inspired by BMW. The car's dynamic silhouette sees precise lines forging a path over taut surfaces towards the rear. Surfaces moulded with eye-catching depth underline the sporting statement of the BMW Zagato Coupé. "For me, the BMW Zagato Coupé holds a very special magic. It exudes a certain spontaneity which, when combined with the type of unconventional solutions typical of Zagato, lend the car a very individual elegance," says Zagato chief designer Norihiko Harada.

A striking front end.

The BMW Zagato Coupé is extremely three-dimensional, very wide and powerfully contoured at the front. The dynamically forward-surging front end dips down prominently towards the road and gives the car an agile sense of purpose, as if in mid-leap. A stunning interpretation of the classic BMW face - with its twin circular headlights, kidney-shaped radiator grille and BMW logo - marks the BMW Zagato Coupé out as a BMW without the need for a second glance. These extremely low, width-emphasising elements lend the front end an undeniably sporty appearance.

The contoured bonnet builds on this dynamic flair with its sweeping lines and taut surfaces. A pair of air intakes integrated into the bonnet send extra supplies of air into the engine compartment and highlight the presence of the high-performance engine beneath. The contours of the bonnet are picked up by the double-bubble roof as the lines of the body continue on to the rear of the car. These two domes built into the structure of the roof are a signature feature of Zagato design and reduce the front area. As well as providing greater headroom when wearing a helmet on the track, the double bubble ("doppia gobba") roof also enhances the car's aerodynamics and increases the roof's torsional rigidity. The roof of almost every Zagato features this design.

Looking further down below the bonnet, the headlights of the BMW Zagato Coupé focus purposefully on the road ahead, and accentuate the car's driver-oriented character and high-speed potential. Low down between the headlights is Zagato's take on the BMW radiator grille, with matt kidney frames inspired by Buckmister Fuller geodetic structures A stand-out detail here is the use of countless small matt Zagato "z" letters to make up the kidney grille. Viewed from the front, the "z" letters appear to be floating within the kidneys. Close-up, it is clear that they are set against a collection of other dark-coloured "z"s positioned into octagons. Gleaming chrome "z"s are used only on the visible side of the octagons. This arrangement injects added depth into the kidney grating and gives the front end an extra touch of class.

The design of the front apron steers the eye to the wheels and the car's broad stance. Large air intakes add low-set finishing touches to the car's nose, their dynamic form and size hinting at the power of the engine under the bonnet.

Dynamic, powerful flanks.

From the side, the BMW Zagato Coupé displays the pared down, clearly defined distribution of visual mass for which Zagato is renowned, blended with the familiar surface treatment and design language of a BMW. Its coupé design also necessitated a new roofline, which highlights the car's potential with impressive fluidity and dynamic élan.

The long, sweeping bonnet sends the greenhouse a long way back towards the rear and the car's visual focus is therefore also pulled rearwards, in traditional Zagato 2 seater style. The rear end itself is cut almost vertically in another Zagato cue, which enhances aerodynamics. The flanks, meanwhile, adopt the classical BMW Roadster lines, imbues them with extra tautness and extends them into the muscular rear end with a compelling swing of the hips. The attractive interplay of lines here draws attention to the rear wheels and the car's rear-wheel-drive configuration. The powerful flourish above the rear wheels is picked up and passed on by the spoiler, injecting the whole area with additional dynamic impetus.

The side air vents reference the form of the bonnet intakes and extend their dynamic agenda to the car's flanks. Below the side vents, the silver "z" provides another nod to the cooperation between BMW and Zagato.

Slightly offset behind the silver "z", a matching indentation provides greater depth and three-dimensionality. The two "z"s in the air intakes and BMW badges are the only gleaming chrome elements on the BMW Zagato Coupé.

Another characteristic Zagato design theme is the specially designed "criss-cross" transition from the side windows into the rear window. The lower section of the side window surrounds slants dramatically upwards just ahead of the rear end and extends to form the upper border of the rear window. In so doing, this hallmark design element links the sides and rear via the C-pillar and ensures a harmonious connection between the different sections of the car. This aspect of the BMW Zagato Coupé design is particularly striking when viewed from above.

A common heritage

Both BMW and Zagato are famous for getting the same inspiration from Professor Kamm's studies on aerodynamic rear end. The 1940 BMW 328 Kamm Coupé as well as the Alfa SZ and TZ boosted a typical Kamm-tail (K-tail) layout. This solution became famous in Italy with the name "Coda Tronca" bodies which were tested by Zagato in the beginning of the 60s.

Kamm Effect is part of the functional design approach that aims to the aerodynamic efficiency. According to this, the CX can be lowered by keeping compact volumes at the same time. The reduction of the wind resistance is assured with the Kamm Tail design, without any need of a very stretched "drop" shape of the tail.

BMW Zagato Coupé doesn't need the support of any fix or mobile rear wing since the aerodynamic of its tail is already very efficient.

A muscular rear end.

The distinctive rear end provides the clearest evidence of Zagato's influence. Formed almost without a single joint, the rear end cuts a classy figure, appearing as if formed from a single mould. Nothing interrupts the flow of surfaces and the powerful sculpture of the rear. At the same time, this also provides evidence of the high degree of hand-craftsmanship involved in making the car and Zagato's experience in the manipulation of surfaces and forms, channelled into the car's design at the company's studio.

Taken as a whole, the rear of the BMW Zagato Coupé has a very broad, low-slung appearance, its powerful, solid form and purposeful design language giving the car a planted stance on the road.

The most distinctive feature of the rear end is the transparent panel in its upper section familiar from other Zagato creations. Divided visually into three sections, the generous glass surfaces open up a line of sight to the lights and into the interior. Their dark tint gives the BMW Zagato Coupé an even sportier look. A curved bar featuring the Zagato trademark splits the surface into sections and gives the car a greater impression of width. The likewise tinted rear window can be opened, offering access to the rear luggage compartment.

A prominent rear bumper feeds downwards into a large diffuser. The diffuser extends well out to the sides, providing an effective contrast to the bar dividing the glass and lending the rear an extremely broad and sporty presence in the process. Matt edging accentuates the form of the diffuser, draws the focus to the wheels and underlines the planted stance of the BMW Zagato Coupé. The exhaust tailpipes, positioned towards the outer edges of the rear, add further emphasis, their matt finish contributing another stylish flourish to the rear.

Highlights and details.

The unique character of the BMW Zagato Coupé is reflected in even smaller details. The 19-inch light-alloy wheels in classically sporty five-spoke design have a hint of propeller about them, offering a subtle nod to the origins of both companies. Indeed, both BMW and Zagato founder Ugo Zagato took an airborne route into automotive construction. Their subtly attractive matt finish lends the car extra allure from the side.

A very special highlight of the BMW Zagato Coupé is its paintwork. The exclusive exterior paint finish Rosso Vivace - an expressive shade of red - brings the surfaces and forms of the BMW Zagato Coupé to life. Depending on how the light hits the body, the colour spectrum ranges from something close to black all the way to a brilliant red. This remarkable depth and radiance is possible thanks to sophisticated paint application technology. The primer coat - made up of a black application, followed by a layer of shimmering metallic silver - is applied first. Then come six ultra-thin coats of the exclusively developed red shade to deliver this unique effect. Finally, two layers of clear coat seal in the colour.

Exquisite touches in the interior.

The interior is clearly structured, in customary BMW style, and invites the keen driver to take the helm. This character was picked up by the Zagato designers and given further emphasis by an exclusive colour and materials concept. Exquisite materials and high-quality details provide an extremely stylish showcase for the interior's sporting flair and driver focus.

Additional elements fitted by hand, such as horizontal lines in the instrument panel and doors, heighten the interior's sense of sporting elegance. The lines culminate in a dynamic upward curve for extra sporting effect. The base colours for the exclusive leather trim are a light and dark shade of grey. Together, they underline the horizontal geometry of the interior, while red decorative stitching in the instrument panel, doors and seats brings the colour of the body into the interior and adds extra sporting touches. A "z" embroidered into the seats is the clearest reference in the interior to the origins of the BMW Zagato Coupé.

The "horizontal line" design theme has also found its way into the luggage compartment, as have the two shades of grey and the red accents. Here, the lines are a subtle reference to the form of the double-bubble roof. Two exclusive accessories - a hat bag and a travel bag - set the seal on Zagato's colour and materials upgrade. The travel bag also recreates the form of the double-bubble roof and is designed to maintain its bulbous lines even when empty.

Zagato - a coachbuilder with a long tradition.

Founded by Ugo Zagato in 1919, today Zagato is the only automotive body manufacturer still in independent ownership. From its earliest days, Zagato has taken a minimalist and pared-down approach to its creations, very much in keeping with the Milanese tradition of design. Volumes takes precedence over details, thanks in part to technical considerations. Body designer Ugo Zagato learned his trade in - among other industries - aviation, where aerodynamics and lightweight construction play a central role. The production version of the dramatically styled prototype goes on-sale in the fall of 2009. Inspired and encouraged by the considerable success of the GranTurismo MC Stradale, which was warmly received by customers thanks to a masterly translation and adaptation of racing characteristics for use on the road, the new Maserati GranCabrio MC has a highly sporty and aggressive look, while maintaining the strengths and characteristics of a true grand tourer, ideal for long journeys.

The car, 48 millimetres longer than the GranCabrio and GranCabrio Sport, is characterised by a front end which is inspired directly by the MC Stradale, adopting a profile designed to optimise the aerodynamic lift and flow. These differ from those on other versions of the GranCabrio due to the increased car length and other aerodynamic elements at the rear end.

The rear is characterised by the large spoiler, for greater negative lift at high speeds. Inside the spoiler, built into the luggage compartment, is the third brake light. The standard version comes in the same colour as the body and, within the various car customisation packages, it is also available with a carbon finish.

Engine

The Maserati GranCabrio Sport, which comes with a modern V8 engine that has already become a classic, adopts the most recent innovations in the field of engineering to deliver greater power and torque.

Both the hardware and software of the engine have been improved significantly, improving its power by 10 HP and torque by 10 Nm, without adversely affecting consumption or emissions.

At 7,000 rpm, the Maserati GranCabrio Sport delivers 338 kW (460 HP) with a considerable torque of 520 Nm at 4,750 rpm.


Automatic transmission (MC Auto Shift)

The automatic six-speed ZF transmission with MC Auto Shift is perfectly capable of handling the exceptional performance of the powerful V8 and derives from the transmission of the GranTurismo Sport. The automatic transmission is connected directly to the rear of the engine and transmits the torque to the same limited-slip differential through a two-piece articulated steel crankshaft.

The Maserati GranCabrio Sport with MC Auto Shift transmission can reach 100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds. Top speed is 285 km/h.


Chassis and suspension

The Maserati GranCabrio Sport was designed to combine peerless driving comfort for all occupants with optimum handling at high speeds.

This is thanks to the shock absorbers with Sport Skyhook system, the most recent development of the Maserati damping control system. Body, CFRP roof, soft-top: Robust, lightweight, expressive.

An intelligent blend of materials also gives the body structure impressive strength coupled with extremely low weight, allowing it to enhance both occupant protection and handling agility. As with the use of CFRP for the roof of the new BMW M6 Coupe, the choice of materials for all other body components slots into the all-round lightweight design strategy. The doors and bonnet of the two high-performance sports cars are made from aluminium, the front side panels from thermoplastic. In addition, their boot lids and - in the case of the BMW M6 Convertible - also the roof cover are made from the glass-fibre composite material SMC (Sheet Moulding Compound). A weight-to-power ratio of 3.3 kg/hp for the new BMW M6 Coupe and 3.5 kg/hp for the new BMW M6 Convertible points to the significant advances that have also been made in this area over the predecessor models.

Robust load-path structures, large and precisely defined deformation zones and highly efficient restraint systems provide the basis for a high level of passive safety in both models. The safety equipment fitted as standard includes front and side airbags, side curtain head airbags for both rows of seats in the new BMW M6 Coupe, and front airbags and head-thorax side airbags integrated into the seat frames of the new BMW M6 Convertible. The soft-top model also benefits from roll-over bars made from high-strength aluminium. Positioned behind the rear head restraints, these protective bars extend automatically in fractions of a second should there be a danger of the car rolling over. Both models come with three-point inertia-reel seat belts on all seats, belt force limiters and belt tensioners for the front seats and ISOFIX child seat attachments in the rear.

Both the new BMW M6 Coupe and new BMW M6 Convertible are designed as four-seaters, and space in the rear compartment has increased substantially compared with the predecessor models. The load capacity of the new BMW M6 Coupe stands at 460 litres. The new BMW M6 Convertible, meanwhile, can carry 300 litres of luggage in the boot with the soft-top down and 350 litres with it closed. Both models can be ordered with the optional ski bag, which slides between the rear seats courtesy of the through-loading facility.

Dynamic contours, lightweight material: the carbon fibre-reinforced plastic roof of the BMW M6 Coupe.

Like its predecessor, the roof of the new BMW M6 Coupe is made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic as standard. The dark colouring of the roof gives the two-door car's silhouette an extremely elongated look, which is further emphasised by a dynamic recess in the centre of the roof.

The use of the lightweight material for the roof allows the car's centre of gravity to be lowered, thereby enhancing agility. BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line trim (standard) draws attention to this optimised weight balance, its dark colouring covering the side window borders (or the waistline in the case of the BMW M6 Convertible) and the base and lower section of the aerodynamically optimised M exterior mirror caps.

BMW M6 Convertible: high-quality soft-top with characteristic "fin" styling and automatic opening and closing function.

The exclusive looks of the new BMW 6-Series Convertible are underlined by the "fin" architecture of the high-quality soft-top roof. Projecting into the rear section, the fins accentuate the car's dynamically sweeping silhouette. The heated, vertical glass rear window, which is situated just behind the rear seats, retracts independently of the soft-top itself. The automatic opening and closing process for the roof can be activated both at a standstill and while on the move at speeds of up to 40 km/h (25 mph) using a button on the centre console. The optional Comfort Access allows the roof to be opened or closed by pressing the remote control button on the car key. It takes the roof 19 seconds to open and 24 seconds to close again.

Interior and operating concept: Pure M feeling, sheer luxury.

The luxurious interior ambience of the new BMW M6 Coupe and the new BMW M6 Convertible is characterised by classy materials and dynamically moulded surfaces, and the bespoke design of the cockpit and centre console - cleverly drawing on the exclusive, high-performance sports car driving experience - lends it an extra individual flair. The instrument cluster with black-panel technology features classical circular instruments in traditional BMW M style, with red needles and white illumination, as well as model-specific displays and the M logo in the rev counter.

The standard-fitted iDrive control system includes a Controller on the centre console, direct menu control buttons and functional bookmarks, as well as an onboard monitor with an exclusive flatscreen design. The optional Navigation system Professional brings with it a 10.2-inch version of the Control Display bordered by a high-quality, galvanised chrome frame.

M leather steering wheel and M sports seats in new, model-specific design.

The model-specific M leather steering wheel of the new BMW M6 Coupe and new BMW M6 Convertible are distinguished by their smaller rim diameter and a new design which takes its cue from the double-spoke construction of the M light-alloy wheels. The likewise newly developed M sports seats offer the driver and front passenger optimum lateral support through quickly-taken corners, but also a high level of comfort over long distances. The lightweight seats with integrated belt system have an M-specific design headlined by extremely prominent cushion and backrest bolsters, head restraints integrated into the backrests, eye-catching stitching emphasising the segments of the seats, and an M logo embossed into the shoulder area.

The M sports seats have electric height, fore/aft and backrest angle adjustment, and also come with pneumatically adjustable lumbar support, a memory function and a manually adjustable thigh support. The M sports seats are fitted with active head restraints to reduce the risk of injury in a rear-end impact.

Ideal vehicle set-up at your fingertips: M Drive buttons.

Arranged around the gearshift lever on the model-specific centre console are the buttons allowing drivers to select their preferred settings for all the adjustable powertrain and chassis functions. The DSC mode, performance characteristics of the engine, Dynamic Damper Control mapping, M Servotronic responses and M DCT Drivelogic shift program can all be adjusted independently at the touch of a button. This allows drivers to put together a detailed set-up configuration for their car and store it by holding down one of the two M Drive buttons on the multifunction steering wheel. The two standard-fitted M Drive buttons allow the driver of the new BMW M6 Coupe and new BMW M6 Convertible to store a dynamic-led configuration under the "M1" button, for example, and a comfort-biased set-up under "M2" - and to call up either in an instant and at any time. The settings stored on the M Drive buttons can also be configured using the iDrive menu.

As with the cars' performance characteristics, the aural profile of the engine can also be tweaked at the touch of a button. In parallel with the exhaust flap control, a sound module is used to enhance the engine's natural acoustic components and this soundtrack is then conveyed into the interior. The system's digital signal processing technology exchanges data directly with the engine management and adjusts its output to the engine's revs, the amount of torque being produced and the car's speed over the road. This gives the driver an impressively accurate impression of how hard the engine is currently working and of the power being unleashed, and provides an even clearer window into the car's responses on the road.

Equipment and BMW ConnectedDrive.

The exclusive character of the two high-performance sports cars is underlined by the high-quality and extensive array of standard equipment they have on board - not to mention an unrivalled selection of high-tech options lending further depth to the driving experience. Standard equipment for both models includes 2-zone automatic climate control, heated seats for the driver and front passenger, fine-grain Merino leather trim with extended features, an M driver's footrest, exclusive carbon-fibre interior trim strips, door sill strips with "M6" lettering, plus ambient light in the interior, an automatically dimming rear-view mirror and exterior mirrors (the exterior mirrors also have a folding function), Cruise Control with braking function, an alarm system and the BMW Professional radio with HiFi loudspeakers.

The range of optional driver assistance systems and mobility services available from BMW ConnectedDrive add unique touches to the two new models. The M-specific version of the Head-Up Display - which, alongside a digital speed readout and tips from the optional Speed Limit Info, also shows the gear currently engaged and a multicolour rev counter symbol, complete with Shift Lights - is joined in the line-up by features including Park Distance Control, a rear-view camera, High Beam Assistant, Speed Limit Info, Lane Change Warning and Lane Departure Warning, Surround View and BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition. Innovative technologies also optimise the integration of the Apple iPhone and other smartphones, as well as music players, and incorporate the use of internet-based services. The Apps option allows iPhone owners to receive web radio stations, for example, and display Facebook and Twitter posts on the onboard monitor. The Real Time Traffic Information function, meanwhile, keeps the driver supplied with impressively accurate and detailed traffic bulletins.

High-performance audio: Bang & Olufsen High End Surround Sound System.

Additional highlights of the options list include the navigation system Professional with hard disk storage, M multifunction seats with electric backrest width adjustment, active seats, active seat ventilation, Comfort Access, a heated steering wheel, the Soft Close Automatic function for the doors, and the Bang & Olufsen High End Surround Sound System. This audio system brings high performance into the world of in-car sound reproduction.

The fully active system with digital signal processing comes with individual amplifiers for all the bass speakers, mid-range speakers and tweeters. Its centre speaker uses the Acoustic Lens Technology developed by Bang & Olufsen. As soon as the audio system is activated, the central element containing the integrated mid-range speaker pops up from the instrument panel, prompting the tweeter lens to extend out at the same time. The total of 12 loudspeakers in the new BMW M6 Convertible and 16 loudspeakers in the new BMW M6 Coupe deliver a uniquely rich and dynamic sound experience.

Model history: Tradition firmly rooted in motor sport.

Considering the BMW 6-Series has motor sport ingrained in its DNA, it comes as little surprise that the origins of the BMW M6 model lie in the early 1970s. When BMW Motorsport GmbH was founded in May 1972, it was immediately tasked with the development of a racing car built on the basis of the BMW 3.0 CS luxury coupe to compete in touring car races. Powered by a 3,340 cc six-cylinder in-line unit initially generating 360 hp, the BMW 3.0 CSL - the L in its name stood for lightweight design - established itself as the most successful touring car of its day, at the same time as showcasing innovations whose technical details filtered through to production car development. Aluminium doors, bonnet and boot lid as well as a five-speed gearbox with magnesium casing were followed in 1973 by the first ever six-cylinder engine with four-valve technology, and then, in 1974, by the debut of the anti-lock braking system. It was firsts such as these that helped to speed the car to success on the race track before finding their way into the brand's roadgoing models - and this same principle continues to be a defining characteristic of BMW M cars today.

The BMW 3.0 CSL won a total of six European Touring Car Championship titles between 1973 and 1979, with power output increasing year on year. By 1976 it already had a 3.2-litre six-cylinder biturbo engine under the bonnet, whose output actually had to be throttled to 750 hp. In the meantime, a brand-new project was taking shape at BMW Motorsport GmbH: a mid-engined supercar developed completely from scratch. Before the BMW M1 could line up for the new Procar Championship, however, 400 units had to be built for homologation purposes. This was how BMW Motorsport GmbH came to bring out its first production car in 1978: not only did the BMW M1 with its 277 hp straight-six engine instantly acquire the title of Germany's quickest production sports car, the entire run of 456 models was snapped up by customers with lightning speed too.

Motor sport technology for the road: the BMW M635i.

By now, the BMW 3.0 CS had been replaced by the BMW 6-Series in the BMW model line-up. And the appetite of many BMW drivers for extra power in their standard production cars had not gone unnoticed by BMW Motorsport GmbH: the free-revving four-valves-per-cylinder engine from the BMW M1 was the perfect choice for evolving the BMW 6-Series luxury coupe into the mighty BMW M635i. The six-cylinder unit unleashed 286 horsepower which, allied to chassis technology that had been precision-honed to handle it as well as streamlined body components, allowed drivers to enjoy a real taste of motor sport during their day-to-day driving. A total of 5,855 BMW M635i models were sold between 1984 and 1989.

The dawn of a new era of phenomenal performance and high tech galore: the first BMW M6.

In 2005, two years after the second generation of the BMW 6-Series made its debut, BMW M GmbH added a high-performance sports car to its portfolio that was simply in a class of its own. The BMW M6 instantly became the epitome of a highly prestigious breed of top-performance automobile brimming with motor racing know-how. Its performance credentials made stunning reading: a high-revving V10 engine derived straight from Formula One with a 5.0-litre displacement and a power output of 373 kW/507 hp, seven-speed Sequential M Gearbox with Drivelogic and Launch Control for accelerating from stationary at maximum power, speed-sensitive, variable M differential lock, plus model-specific chassis technology including Electronic Damper Control (EDC) and compound brakes. The V10 power unit took the overall prize at the highly prestigious International Engine of the Year Awards for two years running, in 2005 and 2006. And in the two years that followed it came top in the category for engines above 4 litres.

The pioneering and progressive character of the BMW M6 is also due in no small part to its trailblazing driver assistance systems, such as the Head-Up Display with its M-specific readouts. One year after the Coupe went on sale it was followed by the BMW M6 Convertible. By 2010, global sales of the high-performance sports car totalled 14,152 units, with the Coupe accounting for 9,087 of these and the open-top version of the BMW M6 the remaining 5,065.

Production: Innovative processes for exceptional automobiles.

With its state-of-the-art production processes and its years of experience in the manufacture of highly exclusive premium automobiles, BMW's Dingolfing site makes a natural choice for building the new BMW M6. Here, at the biggest BMW plant in the world, the M6 Coupe and the M6 Convertible are built on the same assembly lines as the BMW 6-Series models. The luxury BMW 7-Series Sedan models and the BMW 5-Series models are also built here. All these cars, including the BMW M6, benefit from the sharing of product and process modules between different model series, resulting in further improved production efficiency and manufacturing quality. The integrated manufacture of the high-performance sports cars also includes production and assembly of their model-specific chassis, body and interior components.

The BMW plant in Dingolfing, Lower Bavaria, has been part of the global BMW production network since 1967. Today this network comprises plants in 14 different countries. In 1973, BMW began producing complete vehicles at this site, at the newly constructed Plant 2.4. Numerous awards are proof that this plant, which has built more than 8 million BMW automobiles to date, sets very high standards. Approximately 18,600 people currently work at the site, more than 12,000 of them in vehicle production at Plant 2.4.

V-engine production in Munich: cutting-edge technology meets precision craftsmanship.

Based on a well-established process, the high-performance engine of the new BMW M6 is built in the production shop for special-category engines at the BMW Plant Munich. On the V(flex) production line here at BMW's home plant, the engine is built alongside M3 engines and the 12-cylinder units for the BMW 760i and the latest Rolls-Royce models. High-tech processes and the precision craftsmanship of experienced experts guarantee outstanding quality standards.

The engine block and crankcase of the V8 engine are produced in the light-alloy foundry at the BMW Landshut plant. At the start of assembly at the Munich plant the basic engines are mounted on carriers, each of which is fitted with an integrated data storage device. This allows quality-related data to be retrieved during the assembly process. For example, at automated bolting stations the right assembly programs with the correct tightening torques for bolted connections can be activated. At all subsequent assembly stations, too, the engine-specific data helps ensure that employees use the right tools and apply the correct tightening torques. At the same time, core components such as cylinder heads and connecting rods are also coded. This allows them to be precisely tracked from their arrival at the factory through to final assembly. The manufacturing process concludes with a function test on the test bench which each and every engine has to pass before being sent to BMW Plant Dingolfing.



Integrated production based on shared product and process modules allows the Dingolfing plant to optimise manufacturing quality and efficiency - in line with the BMW Value-Added Production System (VPS). Standardised processes allow top-quality multi-model production on a single assembly line to be combined with integrated production planning. Flexible design of the production systems enables the factory to maintain consistently high levels of capacity utilisation, while also ensuring short delivery times within the Customer-Oriented Sales and Production Process (KOVP). Further synergy effects are achieved through use of "product modules" (modular component design).

At the same time, innovative production techniques have been developed which can now be applied across a number of different models and thus across higher production volumes. For example, the door production process is based on research and development work carried out at the BMW Group's Dingolfing-based Aluminium Competence Centre.

Newly developed aluminium processing technology also facilitates intricate modelling of sophisticated design features such as the character line on the doors. For sheet steel components, too, innovative manufacturing processes are used. At the Dingolfing plant, BMW became the world's first carmaker to use hot-stamping technology, whereby galvanised sheet steel is cold-formed, then heated to a temperature of over 900 degrees Celsius, then immediately cooled to a temperature of around 70 degrees and hardened. The cooling is performed in a press with integrated water cooling and takes just a few seconds. This technique gives the components between three and four times the strength of conventional sheet steel.

Pioneering the material of the future: the BMW M6 Coupe's CFRP roof.

One of the most striking features of the new BMW M6 Coupe is its carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof. BMW has extensive expertise in the manufacture of carbon parts, which first went into volume production at the BMW Landshut plant in 2003. In 2013, this plant will also start manufacturing the CFRP passenger cells for the all-electric BMW i3, and for the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. Alongside their respective drive technologies, lightweight design based on use of CFRP is a key feature of both vehicles.

The predecessor of the new BMW M6 Coupe was among the first pioneers of carbon-fibre parts - the material of the future. It was the first model whose roof and bumper supports were both mass-produced from CFRP. Since then, production volumes for carbon-fibre parts have been growing steadily. The current BMW M3 is likewise equipped with a CFRP roof. On the new BMW M6 Coupe, further advances in production technology have enabled the designers to give the CFRP roof striking, aerodynamically optimised contouring.

The extremely lightweight, yet at the same time very sturdy material used in the roof combines optimal stiffness with a significant reduction in weight. This lowers the centre of gravity and makes the BMW M6 Coupe even more agile. A CFRP roof brings weight savings of around 50 per cent over steel and 30 per cent over aluminium, for equivalent or improved functional performance. CFRP also offers outstanding crash performance and extreme durability.
