  1. The new BMW X4 is based on the technical blueprint of the BMW X3, but displays a sporting character very much its own and takes dynamics to another new level. That much is clear when you view the new model head-on. The large air intakes positioned on the outer edges of the front end and the character lines in the front apron allow the BMW X4 - with its signature BMW twin headlights and front fog lamps (both optionally with LED technology) - to maximise its visual presence on the road. The roofline reaches its highest point above the driver and then swoops down smoothly to the trailing edge of the tailgate, mimicking the design language of a classical sporting coupe. The signature swage line running along the flanks of BMW models is split into two on the X4. The first section rises dynamically from the front wheel arches to the rear door handles, while the second part draws the eye to the muscular sculpting of the rear wings. The rear end, complete with L-shaped LED lights in exclusive X4 design and diffuser-look styling, likewise highlights the outstanding dynamic ability of the new BMW X4 - even before it turns a wheel.

The driver and front passenger sit 20 millimetres lower than in the BMW X3. In conjunction with the two-seat look of the rear, this accentuates the coupe character of the new BMW in the classy and exclusive interior as well. And an equally impressive performer in terms of power delivery and CO2 efficiency is the BMW X4 xDrive35d (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 6.7/5.5/6.0 l/100 km [42.2/51.4/47.1 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 157 g/km). Its 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine generates 230 kW/313 hp and peak torque of 630 Nm (465 lb-ft). The BMW X4 xDrive35d accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.2 seconds. The new-generation 2.0-litre diesel engine in the BMW X4 xDrive20d (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 5.8-5.4/5.1-4.8/5.4-5.0 l/100 km [48.7-52.3/55.4-58.9/52.3-56.5 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 141-131 g/km) with eight-speed Steptronic transmission also sets the benchmark when it comes to fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Its four-cylinder unit produces 140 kW/190 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft).

BMW EfficientDynamics: driving pleasure meets fuel economy

The unparalleled BMW EfficientDynamics technology package also minimises the fuel consumption and emissions of the new BMW X4. Included are features such as the Auto Start Stop function and coasting function (if an eight-speed automatic gearbox is fitted), Brake Energy Regeneration and on-demand operation of ancillary units, ensuring an admirable degree of environmental compatibility to go with maximum driving pleasure. Also available as an option to add further efficiency to the mix are fourth-generation reduced-rolling-resistance tyres, which reduce the CO2 emissions of selected variants of the BMW X4 by another 7 g/km.

BMW ConnectedDrive: Services & Apps and assistance systems

The BMW ConnectedDrive features available for the new X4 allow BMW to restate once again its leadership in the link-up of driver, vehicle and outside world. Design and functionality

The new BMW X4 offers the premium mid-size segment its first taste of the Sports Activity Coupe concept. Like the successful and still unique BMW X6, 250,000 units of which have now been sold, the new X4 also provides a compelling and unmistakable presence on the road. Visually, it combines to perfection the powerful character of a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) with the sporting elegance of a classical coupe.

A unique expression of pure driving pleasure

The new BMW X4 may be based on the technical blueprint of the BMW X3, but the moment you set eyes on it, the new SAV reveals a dynamic personality all of its own and an even more ebullient character. At 4,671 millimetres in length, it is just 14 millimetres longer than the X3, but is also 36 millimetres lower to the ground (height: 1,624 mm) and cuts a persuasive figure with its perfectly balanced proportions and distinctive character. The large air intakes positioned on the outer edges of the front end and the precise character lines in the front apron lend the X4 a more muscular and agile appearance. This lowers the car's visual centre of gravity closer to the road, signalling its sharper dynamics. The effect is further enhanced by the fog lamps sited below the signature twin headlights (both also available with LED technology as an option). This arrangement defines the striking "three-eyed" face of every BMW X model.

The coupe-like roofline of the BMW X4 reaches its highest point over the front seats, reflecting the traditional driver focus of BMW cars, before dropping gently down towards the trailing edge of the tailgate. These stretched lines underline the sporting coupe character of the X4 particularly effectively. The standalone design of the BMW X4 is further reinforced by the fresh interpretation of the signature swage line running along the flanks of BMW models which, for the first time, is split into two. The first section rises smoothly from the front wheel arches to the rear door handles, highlighting the outstanding dynamic ability of the new BMW X4, while the second part accentuates the powerful sculpting of the rear wings. The contoured C-pillars - complete with muscular shoulders - represent a perfectly judged continuation of the theme, as does the broad and low-set rear end, which reminds the driver and passengers of the superior performance served up by the new BMW X4 before they even climb aboard.

Sporty and exclusive interior

The interior of the new BMW X4 reveals a harmonious synthesis of sportiness and exclusivity. The X4's body is mounted 36 millimetres closer to the road than that of the BMW X3. The driver and front passenger sit 20 millimetres lower and the rear passengers 28 millimetres lower, creating the feeling of a classical sports coupe. It is a sensation reinforced by the rear seat bench, which comes with the type of continuously moulded side supports normally only provided by two individual seats, but still offers space for three passengers. Equally impressive is the load capacity available (500-1,400 litres), which can be used in a wide variety of ways thanks to the standard 40:20:40 split rear seat bench. Everyday usability is further enhanced by the standard-fitted automatically opening tailgate. This can be specified as an option with the extra convenience of the Smart Opener, which allows it to be opened with a movement of the foot. All BMW X4 variants are fitted with the Radio Professional with iDrive Controller and central display. Among the features contributing to the flawless ergonomics inside the new BMW X4 is the touch-sensitive surface of the new iDrive Touch Controller (available in conjunction with the Navigation System Professional), which allows drivers or passengers to use their finger to write letters for text inputs - a navigation destination, for example.

The premium quality and exclusivity of the interior are underlined by selected materials, subtle electroplated accents, a high-gloss black-panel look (in models with the two-zone automatic climate control system) and aluminium trim strips in the wood panelling. The unmistakable character of the BMW X4 is further highlighted by a level of standard equipment even more generous than that found on board the BMW X3. Indeed, the BMW X4 comes as standard with an automatically opening tailgate, a sports leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles (not available for the X4 xDrive20d with six-speed manual gearbox), variable sport steering, Performance Control and Park Distance Control at the rear.

M Sport package and xLine for extra individualisation

The M Sport package brings the outstanding dynamics of the BMW X4 even more impressively to the fore. One element of the M Sport package is the M Aerodynamics package, which gives the BMW X4 a particularly striking appearance. Powertrain

The first Sports Activity Coupe in the premium mid-size segment also presses home its leadership credentials when it comes to powertrains. Indeed, customers can choose from three petrol engines and a trio of diesels from the launch of the new BMW X4. All the power units meet the EU6 exhaust emissions standard and promise driving pleasure of the highest order. The output spectrum ranges from 135 kW/184 hp to 230 kW/313 hp. Exclusive BMW TwinPower Turbo technology ensures outstanding performance while keeping fuel consumption and CO2 emissions to a minimum.

Powerful and refined petrol engines

Despite these show-stealing performance figures, the X4 xDrive35i keeps fuel consumption down to 8.3 litres/100 km [34.0 mpg imp], which equates to CO2 emissions of 193 g/km. Even more purposeful is the 180 kW/245 hp turbocharged four-cylinder unit powering the BMW X4 xDrive28i (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 9.3-8.7/6.3-5.9/7.4-7.0 l/100 km [30.4-32.5/44.8-47.9/38.2-40.3 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 172-162 g/km), which teams up with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard to produce peak torque of 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) and a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 6.4 seconds. The 2.0-litre petrol engine in the BMW X4 xDrive20i (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 9.2-8.7/6.3-5.9/7.3-6.9 l/100 km [30.7-32.5/44.8-47.9/38.7-40.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 171-161 g/km) with eight-speed Steptronic transmission develops 135 kW/184 hp at 5,000 - 6,250 rpm and serves up 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque between 1,250 and 4,500 rpm. And that allows the X4 xDrive20i to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.1 seconds.

Powerful diesel engines: 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.2 seconds

The BMW X4 xDrive35d ranks as a bona fide member of the dynamic elite. Its optimised 3.0-litre diesel delivers 230 kW/313 hp at 4,400 rpm and puts peak torque of 630 Nm (465 lb-ft) on tap between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. With its standard-fitted Launch Control, the X4 xDrive35d dispatches the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) dash in a mere 5.2 seconds and hits a top speed of 247 km/h (153 mph). This is exceptional performance, but the X4 xDrive35d still posts fuel consumption of just 6.0 litres/100 km [47.1 mpg imp] and emits only 157 grams of CO2 per kilometre. The further developed 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine in the BMW X4 xDrive30d (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 6.6-6.2/5.7-5.4/6.1-5.7 l/100 km [42.8-45.5/49.6-52.3/46.3-49.6 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 159-149 g/km) displays an even sharper dynamic edge. Indeed, with output of 190 kW/258 hp at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) on stream between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a suitably sporty 5.8 seconds. The BMW X4 xDrive20d is powered by a newly developed 2.0-litre diesel engine with an all-aluminium construction, which achieves injection pressure of 2,000 bar thanks to common rail direct injection with solenoid valve injectors. This cutting-edge power unit develops 140 kW/190 hp at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). As a result, the X4 xDrive20d requires just 8.0 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph). And yet, linking up with the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, it pins fuel consumption to 5.4-5.0 litres/100 km [52.3-56.5 mpg imp] and sets the CO2 emission benchmark with figures of just 141-131 g/km.

Intelligent all-wheel-drive system and eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission

All X4 models have a sporty suspension set-up and come with the intelligent all-wheel-drive system xDrive with standard Performance Control. This ensures that drive is also split between the rear wheels continuously and as required, which further improves traction, turn-in and directional stability. Working in tandem with the standard variable sport steering, these systems allow the BMW X4 to deliver driving dynamics that surpass even those of the BMW X3 in terms of sportiness. An xDrive status display in the Control Display uses three-dimensional graphics to keep the driver informed of the car's body roll and pitch. If a navigation system is specified, all BMW X4 models also feature a compass display in the instrument cluster.

The BMW X4 xDrive20d can be ordered with either a six-speed manual gearbox or the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, while the X4 xDrive20i is only offered with the eight-speed Steptronic. The other X4 models come with the eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission as standard. With all automatic models, gears can also be changed using paddles on the sports steering wheel.

BMW EfficientDynamics: ECO PRO mode and coasting function reduce fuel consumption

Further reductions in fuel consumption can be achieved courtesy of ECO PRO mode (selected using the Driving Experience Control switch), the ECO PRO Route option and the eight-speed Steptronic transmission's coasting function. As an option, fourth-generation reduced-rolling-resistance tyres combined with 17-inch light-alloy Streamline style 306 wheels cut CO2 emissions by another 7 g/km.

Proactive Driving Assistant offers recommendations

The innovative BMW Proactive Driving Assistant offers additional potential for fuel saving. This technology uses route data supplied by the car's navigation system to identify situations in advance which will require the car to slow down - e.g. on the way into towns and villages, speed limits etc. - and give suitable recommendations.

With its BMW ConnectedDrive technology, BMW has led the way in the link-up of driver, vehicle and outside world for many years. The new BMW X4 provides further evidence of BMW ConnectedDrive's position at the forefront of development.

Driver assistance and Services & Apps

Providing added safety and greater convenience in the BMW X4 is the optional full-colour Head-Up Display, which projects all important driving information and the assistance systems displays into the driver's field of view in high resolution. What's more, the latest-generation Navigation System Professional with ECO PRO route guidance now teams up with the iDrive Touch Controller whose touchpad allows texts - e.g. a navigation destination - to be easily inputted by using a finger. Ford revealed the 2014 F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition, which adds unique new touches to Raptor's existing Luxury Package, including a Ruby Red Metallic exterior color and box-side graphics. Interior upgrades include Brick Red seat bolsters with black inserts and cloth honeycomb highlights, console top finish panel, and center stack and door panel appliqué accents. Raptor Special Edition is also available in Tuxedo Black Metallic. The 2014 F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition goes on in the fall of 2013.

"Raptor owners are looking for a high-performing, uncompromising off-road pickup truck with the features and luxuries found in today's premium trucks," said Doug Scott, Ford truck group marketing manager. "Since its launch in 2009, we've continually moved Raptor forward in capability and design, and the 2014 Special Edition is the best Raptor yet."

Raptor has found an enviable niche in full-size pickups. SVT Raptor sales are up 14 percent in 2013, with five out of the past six months seeing record sales. More than 13,000 Raptors were sold in 2012.

"The visceral look, sound and performance of Mustang resonates with people, even if they've never driven one. Mustang is definitely more than just a car - it is the heart and soul of Ford."

Ford Mustang's impact goes well beyond the 9 million-plus cars sold in its 50 years of continuous production. It has made thousands of appearances in film, television, music and video games, and is the world's most-liked vehicle on Facebook. For the first time ever, Ford will bring Mustang to customers in key parts of Europe and Asia.

"We crafted this car with the goal of creating a contemporary interpretation of Mustang - an American automotive icon that symbolizes optimism and freedom for millions of people around the world," said Jim Farley, executive vice president of Ford global marketing, sales and service and Lincoln.

All-new shape, yet unmistakably Mustang


The clean-sheet design of both Mustang fastback and convertible evokes the essential character of the brand, retaining key design elements - including the long sculpted hood and short rear deck - with contemporary execution.

"You only get one chance to make a first impression, and when you see this car you immediately see a Mustang strong and true," said Moray Callum, Ford executive director, design, The Americas.

Several key design features define the all-new Ford Mustang, including:

A lower, wider stance with a reduction in roof height, and wider rear fenders and track
The return of Mustang fastback with a sleeker profile enabled by more steeply sloped windshield and rear glass
Three-dimensional, tri-bar taillamps with sequential turn signals
Contemporary execution of the signature shark-bite front fascia and trapezoidal grille
Mustang convertible drivers will appreciate the standard multilayer insulated cloth top that gives the car a more upscale appearance and a quieter cabin. The new top lowers twice as fast as before, and has a sleeker profile when folded for open-air motoring.

The information and controls an active driver needs are all readily accessible in the aviation-inspired cockpit, which is executed with the highest degree of craftsmanship ever found in a Mustang. Large, clear instrumentation puts vehicle information right in front of the driver in the roomier cabin, while improved ergonomics and tactile switches and knobs provide better control. Ford Mustang GT continues with the latest edition of the throaty 5.0-liter V8, now featuring an upgraded valvetrain and cylinder heads that yield more than 420 horsepower (426 PS) and 390 lb.-ft. (529 Nm) of torque. A new intake manifold improves low-speed breathing for better fuel economy, idle stability and emissions.

"This EcoBoost engine delivers where a Mustang driver expects it to, with a broad, flat torque curve that pours out when you stand on it for easy passing or hustling down a twisty road," said Dave Pericak, Ford Mustang chief engineer.

The Mustang EcoBoost engine uses direct injection, variable cam timing and turbocharging to deliver plenty of usable performance and projected segment-leading fuel efficiency. A unique intake manifold and turbocharger housing enable it to deliver the performance Mustang drivers expect with output projected at more than 305 horsepower (309 PS) and 300 lb.-ft. (407 Nm) of torque.

With at least 300 horsepower (304 PS) and 270 lb.-ft. (366 Nm) of torque on tap from the standard 3.7-liter V6, even the most accessible Mustang delivers the performance customers expect.

Drivers will appreciate smoother shifts from the updated manual gearbox, while a reworked automatic transmission features new steering wheel-mounted shift paddles for drivers who want the choice between convenience and control.

Most nimble pony ever

When life throws drivers a curve, the all-new Mustang sets new handling benchmarks for the brand, delivering world-class dynamics and ride quality.

"We already set a very high standard for Mustang's dynamics with Boss 302, and our goal was to go above and beyond that with this new car," said Pericak.

Mustang features all-new front and rear suspension systems. At the front, a new perimeter subframe helps to stiffen the structure while reducing mass, providing a better foundation for more predictable wheel control that benefits handling, steering and ride.

The new double-ball-joint front MacPherson strut system also enables the use of larger, more powerful brakes. This is expected to be the best stopping Mustang yet, with three available brake packages.

At the rear is an all-new integral-link independent rear suspension. The geometry, springs, dampers and bushings all have been specifically modified and tuned for this high-performance application. New aluminum rear knuckles help reduce unsprung mass for improved ride and handling.

Smarter than your average pony

The all-new Ford Mustang features a significant amount of innovative technologies providing drivers with enhanced information, control and connectivity when they want it. From Intelligent Access with push-button start to SYNC® and MyKey® in every Mustang built, plus available Track Apps, MyColor gauges and new Shaker Pro audio system, drivers will be able to customize their time behind the wheel.

50 years of Mustang

April 17, 2014, marks the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the original Ford Mustang and each 2015 model celebrates the milestone with a badge on the instrument panel that includes the galloping pony logo and the words "Mustang - Since 1964." Mustang will continue to be built in the United States at Flat Rock Assembly Plant.

"From day one, we knew if we were going to build a new Mustang, we had to do it right," said Pericak. "We built a new Mustang from the ground up that is quicker, better-looking, more refined and more efficient, without losing any of the raw appeal that people have associated with Mustang for half a century."

Less is more, EcoBoost comes to Mustang

The new 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine brings turbocharging to the Mustang powertrain lineup. Designed to meet the needs of drivers looking for outstanding performance and projected best-in-class fuel efficiency, this EcoBoost engine has been developed specifically for Mustang. The intake manifold and turbocharger housing are optimized to provide better breathing and higher output in Mustang.

With a projected 305-plus horsepower and 300-plus lb.-ft. of torque, this EcoBoost engine fits the bill for a true Mustang powerplant.

"This EcoBoost engine delivers the healthy output that Mustang drivers expect regardless of the speed," said Scott Makowksi, EcoBoost powertrain engineering manager. "This EcoBoost engine might be small in displacement, but it delivers where a Mustang driver expects it with a broad, flat torque curve and great driveability under any conditions."

The newest member of Ford's global family of EcoBoost engines, the 2.3-liter continues to take advantage of state-of-the-art technologies including direct fuel injection, twin independent variable camshaft timing and turbocharging to produce big-engine power and torque with improved fuel efficiency.

This is the first Ford engine to utilize a low-inertia twin-scroll turbocharger that provides quicker boost response while enabling lower emissions and improved efficiency. The cylinder head features an integrated exhaust manifold that separates the inner and outer pairs of cylinders into each inlet passage to the turbo.

Keeping the exhaust pulses separated from the next cylinder in the firing order eliminates mixing losses and maximizes pulse energy to the turbine wheel. The result is quicker torque delivery when the driver needs it for passing maneuvers and similar performance to a twin-turbocharger configuration.

The separated exhaust ports also enable the exhaust valves to stay open longer for reduced pumping losses that improve specific fuel consumption by about 1 percent.

With more than 305 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque pumped out from such a small engine, in a car where drivers are more inclined to use it, ensuring durability was critical. Enhancements to the Mustang EcoBoost engine to withstand the added stresses include:

No Ford Mustang engine lineup would be complete without a great V8 engine at its core. The 5.0-liter V8 powers into a new generation with a host of upgrades that enable it to breathe better, especially at higher engine speeds. Many of these changes are derived from the lessons learned in developing the special edition 2013 Mustang Boss 302.

Getting air into the cylinders and exhaust out is the key to generating more power and torque from any engine, and that has been the focus of development on the V8, which features:

Larger intake valves
Larger exhaust valves
Revised intake camshafts
Revised exhaust camshafts
Stiffer valve springs - ensures that the valves close completely at high rpm
New cylinder-head casting - revised ports that provide a straighter path to the valves for less-restrictive intake and exhaust flow; combustion chamber modifications accommodate larger valves
Sinter forged connecting rods - lighter and more durable for high-rpm operation
Redesigned piston tops - deeper cutouts clear the new larger valves
Rebalanced forged crankshaft - supports higher-rpm operation
These upgrades are projected to generate more than 420 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque.

A new intake manifold includes charge motion control valves to partially close off port flow at lower engine speeds. This increases the air charge tumble and swirl for improved air-fuel mixing. This results in better fuel economy, idle stability and lower emissions.

The variable camshaft timing on the intake side now has a greater range of adjustment available thanks to mid-lock phasers. This enables better optimized control of the valve timing over a broader range of engine speeds and loads for improved fuel economy and emissions

Transmissions

More than most drivers, Mustang owners like to take control and shift for themselves. Whether they select a fully manual gearbox or the updated automatic transmission, the experience will be better than in any previous pony.

The Getrag manual has a new shift linkage design for shorter throws and improved precision. The shift lever is now positioned closer to the driver and away from the cup-holders so the driver has a clear path for shifting.

Mustang blends outstanding all-around performance and everyday usability. Drivers who prefer to let the car handle the shifting during their daily work run, but still want to take control when the roads get twisty, will appreciate the new steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles with rev-matching downshifts that are now standard with the Select-Shift six-speed automatic transmission.

The automatic also features a redesigned case with cast-in ribs that help make it stiffer and reduce the weight. Internally clutches have been optimized and operating temperature has been increased to reduce friction. The output shaft is now supported by a ball-bearing that enables a top speed of 155 mph for Mustang GT.

With a choice of powertrains to match driving styles and lifestyles, the new Mustang has contemporary technology under the hood to match its modern design and remain quintessentially Mustang.

January 2, 2014. Ford Motor Company announced the Ford C-MAX Solar Energi Concept, a first-of-its-kind sun-powered vehicle with the potential to deliver the best of what a plug-in hybrid offers - without depending on the electric grid for fuel.

Instead of powering its battery from an electrical outlet, Ford C-MAX Solar Energi Concept harnesses the power of the sun by using a special concentrator that acts like a magnifying glass, directing intense rays to solar panels on the vehicle roof.

The result is a concept vehicle that takes a day's worth of sunlight to deliver the same performance as the conventional C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid, which draws its power from the electric grid. Ford C-MAX Energi gets a combined best miles per gallon equivalent in its class, with EPA-estimated 108 MPGe city and 92 MPGe highway, for a combined 100 MPGe. By using renewable power, Ford C-MAX Solar Energi Concept is estimated to reduce the annual greenhouse gas emissions a typical owner would produce by four metric tons.

"Ford C-MAX Solar Energi Concept shines a new light on electric transportation and renewable energy," said Mike Tinskey, Ford global director of vehicle electrification and infrastructure. "As an innovation leader, we want to further the public dialog about the art of the possible in moving the world toward a cleaner future."

Ford C-MAX Solar Energi Concept, which will be shown at the 2014 International CES in Las Vegas, is a collaborative project of Ford, San Jose, Calif.-based SunPower Corp. and Atlanta-based Georgia Institute of Technology.

Strong electrified vehicle sales

The C-MAX Solar Energi Concept debuts as Ford caps a record year of electrified vehicle sales.

Ford expects to sell 85,000 hybrids, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles for 2013 - the first full year its six new electrified vehicles were available in dealer showrooms.

C-MAX Energi is Ford's plug-in sales leader, with sales of more than 6,300 through November. Ford sold more plug-in vehicles in October and November than both Toyota and Tesla, and it outsold Toyota through the first 11 months of 2013. Plug-in hybrids continue to grow in sales as more customers discover the benefits of using electricity to extend their driving range.

C-MAX Hybrid over the last year has been a key driver in helping Ford sell more hybrids than any other automaker in the United States, second only to Toyota. C-MAX Hybrid continues to bring new customers to the Ford brand, with a conquest rate of 64 percent and drawing nearly half of its sales from import brands. Conquest rates are even higher in key hybrid growth markets like San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

Breakthrough clean technology

SunPower, which has been Ford's solar technology partner since 2011, is providing high-efficiency solar cells for the roof of Ford C-MAX Solar Energi Concept. Because of the extended time it takes to absorb enough energy to fully charge the vehicle, Ford turned to Georgia Institute of Technology for a way to amplify the sunlight in order to make a solar-powered hybrid feasible for daily use.

Researchers developed an off-vehicle solar concentrator that uses a special Fresnel lens to direct sunlight to the solar cells while boosting the impact of the sunlight by a factor of eight. Fresnel is a compact lens originally developed for use in lighthouses. Similar in concept to a magnifying glass, the patent-pending system tracks the sun as it moves from east to west, drawing enough power from the sun through the concentrator each day to equal a four-hour battery charge (8 kilowatts).

With a full charge, Ford C-MAX Solar Energi Concept is estimated to have the same total range as a conventional C-MAX Energi of up to 620 miles, including up to 21 electric-only miles. Additionally, the vehicle still has a charge port, and can be charged by connecting to a charging station via cord and plug so that drivers retain the option to power up via the grid, if desired.

After Ford C-MAX Solar Energi Concept is shown at CES, Ford and Georgia Tech will begin testing the vehicle in numerous real-world scenarios. The outcome of those tests will help to determine if the concept is feasible as a production car.

Off-the-grid car

By tapping renewable solar energy with a rooftop solar panel system, C-MAX Solar Energi Concept is not dependent on the traditional electric grid for its battery power. Internal Ford data suggest the sun could power up to 75 percent of all trips made by an average driver in a solar hybrid vehicle. This could be especially important in places where the electric grid is underdeveloped, unreliable or expensive to use.

The vehicle also reinforces MyEnergi Lifestyle, a concept revealed by Ford and several partners at 2013 CES. MyEnergi Lifestyle uses math, science and computer modeling to help homeowners understand how they can take advantage of energy-efficient home appliances, solar power systems and plug-in hybrid vehicles to significantly reduce monthly expenses while also reducing their overall carbon footprint.

The positive environmental impact from Ford C-MAX Solar Energi could be significant. It would reduce yearly CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions from the average U.S. car owner by as much as four metric tons - the equivalent of what a U.S. house produces in four months.

If all light-duty vehicles in the United States were to adopt Ford C-MAX Solar Energi Concept technology, annual greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced by approximately 1 billion metric tons.

June 26, 2015. The RS5 TDI concept technology study is powered by an enhanced-output V6 3.0 TDI biturbo boosted by an electrically driven turbocharger. This new development makes the diesel engine sportier and more efficient.

"25 years ago, Audi launched the first TDI on the market, writing the first chapter of an enduring success story," says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member for Technical Development. "Our latest innovation is the electric turbocharger, which further improves not just sprint times and pulling power, but also efficiency. This technology illustrates the possibilities harbored by 48-volt electrical systems, which we are currently developing for use in production vehicles."

The V6 biturbo in the Audi RS5 TDI concept produces 283 kW (385 hp); from 1,250 to 2,000 rpm it transfers 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft) of torque to the crankshaft. The red-line is at 5,500 rpm. The supplemental electric turbocharger provides for staggering power when starting off. An electric motor replaces the turbine wheel and accelerates the compressor wheel to over 70,000 rpm in a few hundredths of a second. The exhaust turbochargers also provide as much as 2.4 bar of relative boost pressure.

This combination enables the Audi RS5 TDI concept to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in just four seconds. The 200 km/h (124.3 mph) mark is reached in less than 16 seconds, and top speed is 280 km/h (174.0 mph). The average fuel consumption of less than 5.3 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (less than 140 grams CO2 per kilometer) (44.4 US mpg/225.3 g/mi) documents the outstanding efficiency.

Recuperation is the primary source of the drive energy for the electric turbocharger. To transmit this energy, the RS5 TDI concept uses a separate 48-volt electrical system that is connected to the conventional 12-volt electrical system via a DC/DC converter. The energy is stored in a compact lithium-ion battery. The advantage of 48-volt electrical systems is that they enable the transmission of larger amounts of energy. This makes them an important milestone in the Audi electrification strategy.

In the grounds of the famous Goodwood Estate, McLaren GT has confirmed first details of the McLaren 650S GT3 - the latest generation track-focused racer which will contest GT3 championships across the globe from the 2015 season. Building on the highly successful 12C GT3, which has firmly re-established McLaren at the front of the GT grid over the past three seasons, the 650S GT3 was unveiled in front of fans and the global motorsport media at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

As the 12C GT3 continues claiming trophies around the world, the 650S GT3 has big shoes to fill, but it has been designed to do just that. The menacing and purposeful-looking racer is the second-generation GT3 car from McLaren GT, the GT race car building arm of McLaren, and follows in the slipstream of the 12C GT3, now competing in its third competitive season. To date, the 12C GT3 has secured three championship titles, 51 race victories and 71 further podiums, a number that continues to rise on a weekly basis, and currently leads the highly competitive Blancpain Endurance Series and the GT Asia championship.

Based on the recently unveiled McLaren 650S, and built around the same lightweight carbon fibre MonoCell chassis, the GT3 iteration has been honed using CFD technology and the latest in automotive and motorsport simulation to offer enhanced aerodynamics and improved levels of cooling. At the front, an aggressive splitter and larger air intakes dominate the purposeful new look, incorporating the familiar McLaren 'face' - albeit a more aggressive and menacing version, while on the flanks, the all-new lightweight carbon fibre bodywork wraps around reprofiled air intakes, which offer further optimised cooling. The fixed carbon fibre rear wing works in tandem with the large carbon fibre splitter to complete the management of air as it is worked across, through and beneath the sleek lines of the 650S GT3.






The road-going version has been designed and developed to provide 'the ultimate in driver engagement on the road', and the 650S GT3 uses this same approach. Revised suspension geometry, wider track and updates to the overall setup provide enhanced levels of drivability, optimising engagement for the wide range of drivers competing in GT racing. In addition, the updates have been made with added emphasis on endurance racing, pulling from the learnings over the past few years, and responding to feedback from the customer teams.

Reduced cost of ownership has been a priority during the design and development of the 650S GT3, and this has been achieved through extended component life, including increased engine and gearbox rebuild intervals, together with re-designed components and systems to reduce parts costs. Body panel design and fit have also been optimised which will not only minimise pit lane repair times but also aids weight distribution through the use of lighter components.

Increased levels of safety and refinement for the driver

Inside the cockpit, the 650S GT3 provides improved levels safety for the driver. Protection offered by the carbon fibre MonoCell chassis is further enhanced with the addition of an FIA-approved rollcage. Redesigned and lighter than that of the 12C GT3, the 650S GT3 rollcage provides a greater degree of driver comfort, with increased leg and headroom.

Another key area that has been optimised is the level of refinement, underlining the focus on endurance and driver engagement. As with its predecessor, the 650S GT3 is fitted with a bespoke motorsport digital dash display which sits behind the unique 650S GT3 steering wheel, inspired by the wheel design seen in the McLaren Mercedes Formula 1™ car. New to the 650S GT3 is a fully FIA-approved McLaren GT-developed race seat, fitted with a six-point race harness as standard. This seat offers increased levels of support and driver comfort through the use of bespoke moulded seat inserts.

The layout within the cockpit has been revised to make it even more driver-focused than previously. The seat is directly mounted to the chassis, and the steering wheel and all-new motorsport pedalbox are then adjustable to bring them closer to the driver. The centre console is also developed from the latest 12C GT3 interior, reducing complexity, and features a membrane-type switch panel for ease of use. In addition to this, improvements have been made to further optimise ventilation and driver cooling.

Award-winning technology, optimised cooling

The McLaren 650S GT3 is equipped with the latest generation of the award-winning, 3.8-litre McLaren V8 twin turbo 'M838T' engine. Race-prepared and including a McLaren-developed ECU offering increased functionality to incorporate turbo boost and transmission shift control, the engine is coupled to an all-new six-speed sequential motorsport transmission. The 650S GT3 produces around 500PS - the same power as the 12C GT3, which is controlled by the FIA's Balance of Performance (BOP) regulations. Cooling is improved through larger 650S intakes within the front bumper and re-profiled side intakes. In addition to this, the gearbox oil cooler has been relocated, now incorporated into the larger side intakes, giving the rear of the car a cleaner, more aerodynamic flow.

Race tuned with increased grip

The McLaren 650S GT3 uses an all-new race-tuned suspension system with a 52mm wider track than the 12C GT3. The front suspension also allows the fitment of the latest generation larger diameter racing tyres . In conjunction with the optimised aerodynamic package, this provides increased levels of front-end grip and steering feel on turn-in. Newly designed forged aluminium wheels (front - 12.5" x 18", rear - 13" x 18") are held in place with a single wheel retaining nut on motorsport axles, while a revised hub bearing assembly and extended-life suspension components are another example of a simplified service item, and reduced maintenance costs.

Behind the new design eight-spoke wheels, and bringing the power, aerodynamics and downforce under control is a newly-developed braking system with monoblock six-piston callipers on the front, and four-piston on the rear, with ventilated discs (380 x 35mm front / 355 x 32mm rear).

Existing owners can upgrade

The McLaren 650S GT3 development programme has pulled significant data from the findings and lessons learned from the 12C GT3 programme. Testing of the 650S GT3 will continue throughout the summer with customer car production commencing in the autumn. Pricing for the 650S GT3 has been confirmed - £330,000 ex works, plus tax.

Existing owners of the 12C GT3 are also able to benefit from the updates and enhancements offered by the 650S GT3, due to the use of the shared chassis structure and award winning engine. This upgrade package further extends the life of existing 12C GT3 cars allowing them to continue racing competitively through a second GT racing life cycle. For many McLaren GT3 owners this allows them to race their existing car for an average of six seasons.

Around 15 examples of the McLaren 650S GT3 are planned to be produced and delivered for the start of the 2015 season. With the optional upgrade package for 12C GT3, this could see an additional 15 cars running the new design from next season.

   June 30, 2014. Aston Martin unveiled an exceptional new addition to the hugely popular PlayStation®3 exclusive racing game Gran Turismo®6 (GT6™) in the shape of the stunning Design Prototype 100 - DP-100 Vision Gran Turismo.

Developed in-house by the Design team at Aston Martin, led by Design Director Marek Reichman, DP-100 Vision Gran Turismo is a new, virtual-only GT racer that will be available for Gran Turismo®6 (GT6™) owners to download in July 2014, following the global launch at 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Starting with nothing but the traditional 'blank sheet of paper' the design team and design engineers worked for six months to create the new addition to the Vision Gran Turismo stable of race cars. Clearly pushing the boundaries of what an Aston Martin could be, DP-100 not only looks beautiful but also boasts a high degree of engineering integrity.

The twin-turbo V12 mid-engined racer offers up to 800bhp, endowing it with blistering performance fully in keeping with the high octane nature of the game.

Created utilising many of the same techniques as applied in the development of Aston Martin production sports cars - hand sketches and 3D modelling, followed by full realisation in the virtual world - DP-100 provides an exceptional level of detail with a fully functioning suspension system and state-of-the-art electronics.

Design Director Marek Reichman said: "DP-100 has been an exciting and intensive project for the team here at Gaydon. Features such as the car's revolutionary 'active aerodynamics' are there not just as a way of enhancing form, but also to support the car's function in-game. As with the CC100 Speedster Concept, many of the design cues visible in DP-100, such as the light blade rear lamps, could also feed through into future sports cars that we'll launch in the offline world so the importance of this project should not be underestimated."

Aston Martin has supported previous editions of the long-running and hugely successful Gran Turismo® series, debuting in the very first game with the Aston Martin DB7 Coupé and Volante. The stunning 2011 Aston Martin One-77 is already a popular car in the Gran Turismo® 6 stable.

June 16, 2012. First introduced 12 years ago, the Audi RS4 Avant is a modern classic. Audi now presents the third generation of the car, with a high-revving V8 FSI developing 331 kW (450 hp), a high-performance drivetrain and a diverse range of assistance and infotainment technologies. Like all RS models, the new RS4 Avant is a sports car for everyday use. It combines strong performance with unrestricted utility.

The new Audi RS4 Avant is immensely powerful. Its 4.2 FSI produces 331 kW (450 hp) at 8,250 rpm, with 430 Nm (317.15 lb-ft) of torque available between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. The normally aspirated, high-revving V8 accelerates the top-of-the-line Avant from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.7 seconds on its way to a governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). This can be increased to 280 km/h (173.98 mph) upon request. However, average fuel consumption is a mere 10.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (21.98 US mpg).

With its long top gear, the standard seven-speed S tronic contributes to the good fuel economy. Launch Control manages starts with optimal traction at the push of a button. As with every Audi RS model, the engine's power flows to all four wheels via the quattro permanent all-wheel drive, here in the latest stage of development with the self-locking crown gear center differential and torque vectoring. Audi also offers the optional sport differential, which actively distributes the power between the rear wheels.

The suspension of the Audi RS4 Avant is made largely of aluminum. The body is lowered by 20 millimeters (0.79 in) compared with the A4 Avant. The new electromechanical power steering is highly efficient and provides excellent road feedback.

The 19-inch, forged alloy wheels are fitted with 265/35-series tires. 20-inch wheels are available as an option. The brake system features large, internally vented discs with an innovative wave design; the front calipers each have eight pistons.

Carbon fiber-ceramic discs are available up front upon request. The electronic stabilization control (ESC) has a Sport mode and can be deactivated entirely, if necessary.

The 19-inch, forged alloy wheels are fitted with 265/35-series tires. 20-inch wheels are available as an option. The brake system features large, internally vented discs with an innovative wave design; the front calipers each have eight pistons.

Dynamic: sport suspension plus with DRC

The Audi drive select dynamic system is standard. Dynamic steering, the sport differential and the sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) are available as options. The latter is a purely hydraulic system without any lag, whose damping can be switched between the three characteristics comfort, auto and dynamic via Audi drive select.

The design of the new Audi RS4 Avant also expresses its dynamic nature. The wedge-shaped headlights use xenon plus technology, and the LED daytime running lights constitute a narrow brace. The upper corners of the large single-frame grille are tapered. Sharp creases divide the engine hood, and large air inlets structure the distinctive front skirt. The rear lights feature LED technology.

The elegant interior is entirely in black. Carbon inlays are standard, with aluminum, piano finish or stainless steel mesh available as options. The leather multifunction sport steering wheel is flattened at the bottom, and the head restraints are integrated into the backs of the S sport seats. Luggage capacity ranges between 490 and 1,430 liters (17.30 and 50.50 cubic feet), depending on the position of the rear seatbacks.

All display and control elements in the new Audi RS4 Avant, up to and including the optional MMI navigation plus, impress with their fine finish and clear ergonomics. Audi also offers a wide selection of modern driver assistance systems and infotainment modules as options. These include the Bang & Olufsen sound system and the Bluetooth online car phone, which delivers the tailored services of Audi connect to the car.

The RS4 will arrive at dealerships in fall 2012, with prices in Germany starting at €76,600.

Engine

The strong heart of the new Audi RS4 Avant has eight cylinders. The 4.2 FSI, which displaces 4,163 cc, combines excellent pulling power with instant response and an exhilarating willingness to rev, all backed by a widely differentiated, musical sound spectrum. The V8 produces 430 Nm (317.15 lb-ft) of torque from 4,000 to 6,000 rpm and puts out 331 kW (450 hp) at 8,250 rpm. The maximum torque is 8,500 rpm. The naturally aspirated FSI has a specific power output of 79.5 kW (108.1 hp) per liter of displacement; each hp only needs to move 4.0 kilograms (8.82 lb) of weight.

The 4.2 FSI accelerates the new top model in the A4 family from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.7 seconds on its way to a governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). This can be increased to 280 km/h (173.98 mph) upon request. The eight-cylinder engine averages 10.7 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (21.98 US mpg) - 26 percent less than the previous model.

The technologies from the Audi modular efficiency platform are behind this impressive figure. The cylinder barrels and the chain drive are characterized by minimal friction, and the oil pump is demand-controlled.

The normally aspirated V8 is also a visual experience. Its cylinder head covers are painted red, and an optional carbon inlay adorns the intake plenum. The hand-built 4.2 FSI has a classic cylinder angle of 90 degrees. The two opposing banks are offset by 18.5 millimeters.

The V8 weighs just 216 kilograms (476.2 lb). The forged crankshaft, the forged steel connecting rods and the pistons forged from a high-strength aluminum alloy are all lightweight, yet strong. The crankcase is manufactured using the low-pressure die-casting method, which ensures particular homogeneity. The aluminum-silicon alloy combines low weight with high strength. Its high silicon content makes the cylinder barrels extremely durable.

The crankcase is configured as a bedplate construction. The lower bearing bridges for the crankshaft are integrated into a common frame for maximum rigidity and optimal vibration behavior. The cast iron bearing bridges reduce the thermal expansion of the crankcase and thus keep the play at the main bearings of the crankshaft within tight limits.

As in all Audi gasoline engines, fuel is distributed to the 4.2 FSI via common rail direct injection using FSI technology. The fuel is swirled intensively in the combustion chambers, which cools the walls. This process minimizes the risk of knock - the detonation of the mixture on hot spots. It allows a very high compression ratio of 11.0:1, which increases both output and efficiency.

Breathing freely: gas exchange

The long-stroke engine (bore x lift 84.5 x 92.8 mm [3.33 x 3.65 in]) can breathe freely in and out thanks to intensive refinements to the dual-flow intake and exhaust system with the two throttle valves. Vacuum-actuated tumble flaps controlled by the engine management system are integrated into the intake ports. Under partial load, they cause the air to move with a roller-like rotation, which increases the burning rate and thus the efficiency of the combustion process.

The four camshafts, which can be adjusted hydraulically through 42 degrees of crankshaft angle, are driven by chains running on the back side of the engine. The 32 valves, which are actuated via roller cam followers, have large diameters - 33.9 millimeters (1.33 in) on the intake side and 28.0 millimeters (1.10 in) in the case of the sodium-coiled exhaust values.

The Audi developers also adhered to the principles of ultra-lightweight construction for the peripherals of the 4.2 FSI. The intake manifold is made of polymers; a pressure sensor is used to measure the loads very precisely. The V8 gets by with only a single, newly developed controller.

The pipes of the manifold and of the exhaust system, which have been optimized for low backpressure, are hydroformed from stainless steel. A flap is integrated into each of the two large tailpipes of the dual exhaust system. At higher loads and engine speeds - or at the push of a button in the Audi drive select system - they open to provide a richer sound. Audi offers an optional sport exhaust system with black tailpipe tips that also includes this switching function.

Drivetrain

The seven-speed S tronic transmission in the new Audi RS4 Avant harmonizes perfectly with the high-revving character of the 4.2 FSI and is designed for 9,000 rpm. Compared with the volume model, targeted modifications have been made to certain aspects of the dual-clutch transmission. The seventh gear is relatively long to reduce fuel consumption.

The seven-speed S tronic consists of two sub-units, whose multi-plate clutches actuate different gears. The large K1 clutch located on the outside directs the power via a solid shaft to the gear wheels for the odd-numbered gears 1, 3, 5 and 7. A hollow shaft rotates around the solid shaft. It is connected to the smaller K2 clutch, which is integrated into the inside of the K1 clutch, and which controls the gear wheels for the even-numbered gears 2, 4 and 6, as well as the reverse gear.

Both transmission sub-units are continuously active, but only one is powered at a time by the engine. For example, when the driver accelerates in third gear, the fourth gear is already engaged in the second transmission section. The shifting process takes place as the clutch changes - K1 opens and K2 closes. Shifting gears takes only a few hundredths of a second and is completed with practically no interruption of traction. It is so dynamic, fluid and smooth that it is hardly noticeable.

The driver of the new Audi RS4 Avant can use the seven-speed S tronic in a number of different ways. The fully automatic mode offers the D (Drive) and S (Sport) programs. The management system also considers the mode selected in the Audi drive select dynamics system.

If the driver changes gears manually, either via the gear selection lever or the paddles behind the steering wheel, the seven-speed S tronic switches into a particularly sporty mode. It no longer upshifts when accelerating, for example. If the dynamic Audi drive select mode is active, the transmission management system double-clutches when downshifting.

Another specialty of the seven-speed S tronic in the Audi RS4 Avant is the launch control function, which enables extremely dynamic starts. The driver needs only to press the accelerator to the floor. The system manages the engagement of the clutch so that all of the power of the 4.2 FSI is delivered to the road via the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system with perfectly controlled tire slip.

Latest evolutionary stage: the quattro powertrain

In its latest evolutionary stage, the quattro powertrain features the self-locking crown gear center differential and torque vectoring. The two crown gears rotating inside the center differential get their name from their tooth geometry.

The front crown gear acts on the output shaft to the front axle differential, the rear gear on the prop shaft to the rear axle differential. A lightweight plug construction provides the connection. The crown gears mesh with four rotatable pinion gears. They are arranged at right angles to each other and are driven by the differential's housing, i.e. by the transmission output shaft.

Under normal driving conditions, the two crown gears rotate at the same speed as the housing. Because of their special geometry, they have specifically unequal lever effects. Normally 60 percent of the engine torque goes to the rear differential and 40 percent to the front differential.

If the torques change because one axle loses grip, different speeds and axial forces occur inside the differential, and the integrated plate packages are pressed together. The resulting self-locking effect now diverts the majority of the torque to the axle with the better traction; up to 85 percent can flow to the back. If the rear axle has less traction, up to 70 percent of the torque flows to the front axle.

With this extremely broad torque distribution range, the crown-gear center differential surpasses its predecessors. Forces are redistributed without any time lag and absolutely consistently. The mechanical operating principle guarantees maximum efficiency and immediate response. Other strong points of the crown-gear differential are its compactness and low weight - at 4.8 kilograms (10.58 lb) it weighs roughly two kilograms (4.41 lb) less than the previous unit.

In the new Audi RS4 Avant, the crown-gear differential works together with an intelligent software solution in the brake management system so that torque vectoring acts on all four wheels. When cornering at speed, its control unit uses the driver's steering input and the position of the gas pedal to calculate the optimal distribution of power. If it detects that the wheels on the inside of the curve, which are under a reduced load, are about to slip, it marginally brakes these wheels - just slight application of the pads on the disks at minimal pressure is all that it takes.

Torque vectoring works smoothly and continuously. The Audi RS4 Avant remains neutral for an extremely long time at the handling limits; the slight understeer when turning into curves and when accelerating is essentially offset. The ESC stabilization control intervenes later and more gently - if it is even necessary at all.

High-tech rear differential: the sport differential

As an additional option, Audi supplements the quattro powertrain with the sport differential, which actively distributes the power between the rear wheels. When turning into or accelerating in a curve, it directs the majority of the torque to the outside wheel and pushes the Audi RS4 Avant into the curve, nipping the tendency to oversteer or understeer in the bud.

With the sport differential, a superposition gear comprising two sun gears and an internal gear is mounted on both sides of a conventional differential. It turns 10 percent faster than the drive shaft. A multi-plate clutch in an oil bath and operated by an electrohydraulic actuator provides the power connection between the shaft and the superposition gear.

When the clutch closes, it steplessly imposes the higher speed of the superposition stage on the outside wheel. The additional torque required is drawn away from the inside wheel via the differential. In this way nearly all of the torque can be directed to one wheel. The maximum difference between the wheels is 1,800 Nm (1,327.61 lb-ft).

The sport differential is just as effective when coasting and rolling as it is under load, reacting electronically in just a few hundredths of a second. Audi has developed special software for use in the Audi RS4 Avant. The controller constantly recalculates the ideal distribution of the forces for each driving situation as a function of the steering angle, yaw angle, lateral acceleration, speed and other information.

Chassis

The sports car for everyday use offers exhilarating dynamics. Its handling is uncompromisingly precise; its reactions are virtually instantaneous, and its stability guarantees maximum driving safety. The newly developed electromechanical power steering connects the driver with the road to provide sensitive, well-differentiated feedback.

Steering boost changes as a function of speed. The electric motor integrated into the steering gear consumes no energy when driving straight ahead, thus lowering fuel consumption by as much as 0.3 liters per 100 km. The steering gear is very compact thanks to the concentric arrangement of the steering rack and servo drive.

The electromechanical power steering system's ratio of 16.3:1 is sporty and direct. The low-mounted steering gear communicates the steering input to the wheels over the shortest possible distance via the track rods.

The Audi RS4 Avant has a turning circle of approximately 11.9 meters (39.04 ft). The steering works closely together with the optional assistance system Audi active lane assist. When braking on a surface that is slippery on one side, the system helps the driver by facilitating the proper corrections and inhibiting improper steering movements.

All major suspension components are made of aluminum, which greatly reduces the unsprung masses. The five-link front suspension processes the longitudinal and lateral forces separately. The aluminum frame to which it is linked makes the front end extremely rigid. The springs and dampers of the track-controlled trapezoidal link rear suspension are separated to improve response behavior. The links are mounted on a steel subframe on elastic bearings.

Decidedly taut: the setup

The Audi engineers have given the new RS4 Avant a strictly dynamic setup. Stiff bearings provide for sporty elastokinematics, and the stabilizer bars are thicker than in the volume A4. The shock absorbers are stiffer, and the body has been lowered 20 millimeters (0.79 in). Audi also offers the sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) as an option. It reduces all body movements purely mechanically and thus without any lag, and is compact and lightweight.

The principle behind the DRC is impressively simple. The diagonally opposed pairs of shock absorbers are linked by hydraulic lines and a central valve. When cornering at speed, the valves regulate the oil flow in the shock absorber of the deflected outside front wheel almost immediately. They increase the support provided and reduce lateral tilt. The system is combined with variable damper control, which can be switched between three stages using the standard Audi drive select dynamics system.

In addition to the sport suspension plus and the sport differential, both of which are optional, Audi drive select also incorporates the electromechanical power steering, the seven-speed S tronic, the engine's throttle valves and the sound flap in the exhaust system.

The driver can vary the function of these systems between the modes comfort, auto and dynamic. And if the car is equipped with an MMI navigation system, there is also a fourth mode which can be configured within certain limits by the driver.

Another optional component of Audi drive select is dynamic steering, whose characteristics have been specially tuned in the Audi RS4 Avant. The key component is a high-tech superposition gear in the steering column. It steplessly varies the steering ratio as a function of speed, from very direct when maneuvering to indirect on the highway. At the cornering limit, the dynamic steering countersteers with minimal pulses, making the handling even more dynamic, fluid and safe. It prevents the car from pulling when braking on a surface that is slippery on one side.

The Audi RS4 Avant comes standard with ten-spoke wheels made of machine-polished forged aluminum. The 9J x 19 wheels are fitted with 265/35-series tires. Audi offers optional 20-inch wheels in three variants with 265/30-series tires, with two featuring a machine-polished, titanium-look finish. Winter wheels featuring the same dimensions are available. All tires have been optimized for rolling resistance without compromising handling or braking.

Powerful and lightweight: the brakes

Large wave-design discs are mounted behind the large wheels. Discs measuring 365 millimeters (14.37 in) in diameter and 34 millimeters (1.34 in) thick are mounted on the front axle; the rear axle features discs measuring 324 x 22 millimeters (12.76 x 0.87 in). The friction rings are internally vented and perforated. Their new wave-like outer contour reduces the overall weight of the brake system by roughly 2.5 kilograms (5.51 lb). Stainless steel pins connect the steel friction rings to the aluminum brake caps. This concept borrowed from racing reduces tensions, quickly dissipates the heat and prevents the transmission of temperature peaks.

The monoblock calipers painted high-gloss black and bearing RS logos are also made of aluminum. The front calipers each have eight pistons; single-piston floating calipers are mounted on the rear axle.

For the front axle, Audi offers the option of 380 millimeter (14.96 in) perforated carbon fiber ceramic discs and six-piston calipers in Anthracite Gray. The base material is silicon carbide, a material with a diamond-like crystal structure in which high-strength carbon fibers are embedded.

The geometry of the cooling channels quickly dissipates the heat. Titanium bolts connect the friction rings to the forged aluminum caps. The ceramic discs are practically fade-free, extremely robust, powerful and durable. Altogether they weigh 4.5 kilograms (9.92 lb) less than the steel discs despite their larger size.

The ESC stabilization control has been specially configured for the dynamic profile of the new Audi RS4 Avant. With the touch of a button, the driver can select the Sport mode that deactivates the engine interventions and thus permits spectacular but safe drifts when accelerating. The ESC can also be deactivated entirely for particularly dynamic driving. A subfunction of the system is the optional Audi hold assist. It makes it easier to start off on grades by maintaining the pressure in the system after the brake pedal is released.

Exterior design

The high-performance character of the Audi RS4 Avant is clearly evident at first glance. The elegant exterior design is distinctively accentuated by sharp details that change the exterior dimensions compared with the volume model. The new top model in the model series is 4,719 millimeters (15.48 ft) long, 20 millimeters (0.79 in) longer than the A4 Avant. It has a width of 1,850 millimeters (6.07 ft), which is 24 millimeters (0.94 in) wider than the model on which it is based, yet its height of 1,416 millimeters (4.65 ft) is 20 millimeters (0.79 in) lower.

The hexagonal single-frame grille is set in a frame with a matt aluminum-look finish; its honeycomb insert is finished in high-gloss anthracite and adorned with an RS4 badge. LED daytime running lights encircle the xenon plus units like a clasp in the wedge-shaped headlights with a wavy bottom edge. The air flows through large air inlets broken up by angled struts and covered with honeycomb grilles. They are integrated into a boldly contoured bumper that tapers into a splitter edge. The low center air inlet is divided into three small openings.

The side view is dominated by the chiseled side sill caps and flared wheel wells. The flared side elements with the sharp horizontal upper edges are a small tribute to that all-wheel drive pioneer from 1980, the Audi quattro. The side mirror housings and trim strips have a matt aluminum-look finish, and an extended roof spoiler with a recessed center segment increases the downforce on the rear axle.

Catching the eye at the intensively sculpted rear end of the car are the RS4 badge and the prominent bumper. The two large, elliptical tailpipe tips of the dual exhaust system are integrated into the diffuser, which extends far upward. In the upper section of the diffuser is a honeycomb insert. If the optional matt aluminum styling package is selected, an aluminum-look contour above the insert separates the diffuser from the body. The standard LED rear lights radiate elegant light patterns.

A choice of eight colors is offered: solid Ibis White, the metallic paint finish Suzuka Gray, the pearl effect colors Daytona Gray, Misano Red, Phantom Black and Sepang Blue, and the specially pigmented crystal effect colors Panther Black and Prism Silver. Audi exclusive customized paint finishes are also available. Other elegant alternatives are the styling packages in black or matt aluminum as well as the carbon engine compartment cover.

The body of the high-performance Avant boasts high rigidity and crash safety combined with low weight. A strut brace is integrated into the front section of the car. The extensively clad underbody includes air vents for the seven-speed S tronic and the front brakes. Thanks to its advanced aerodynamics, the Audi RS4 Avant generates downforce at high speed to further enhance stability. The cD value is 0.34; the front surface area measures 2.18 m² (23.47 sq ft).

Interior

The spacious interior is sporty and elegant; the fit and finish of uncompromising quality. The controls, another classic Audi strength, are intuitive to the last detail. The terminal for the optional MMI navigation plus, for example, has five hard keys for the menu functions, and the volume control now includes a skip function for moving to the next song.

The interior is entirely in black. The one exception is the headlining, which is optionally available in lunar silver. Carbon inlays are standard, with matt brushed aluminum, 3D-look Aluminum Race, black piano finish or a light stainless steel mesh available as options. quattro GmbH also offers a selection of elegant wood veneers as part of the Audi exclusive range for further customization.

The S sport seats are standard in the dynamic top model. They feature large side bolsters on the backrest and the extendable seat cushion, integrated head restraints, seat heating and power adjustment, including a four-way power lumbar support. The S sport seats are covered with a combination of black leather and Alcantara.

Audi offers Fine Nappa leather in black or lunar silver accentuated with rock gray piping as an option. Other options include bucket seats or luxurious, climate-controlled comfort seats with a ventilation function. The Audi exclusive range includes high-grade leather packages, including bucket seats covered in diamond-quilted Valcona leather.

A world of wonders: behind the steering wheel

The leather multifunction sport steering wheel has a deeply sculpted rim covered in perforated leather. It is flattened at the bottom, and the shift paddles are in aluminum look. The control buttons and rollers provide fast access to the driver information system with its color display. It includes a special RS menu with a lap timer and an oil temperature gauge. When the car is started, both it and the MMI screen display an RS welcome logo, and the needles of the speedometer and tachometer briefly run up before returning to zero.

The bezels of the instrument cluster and the center console shine with a piano finish, and the design of the selector knob of the seven-speed S tronic is unique to the RS. The door openers taper down to separate, narrow bars - a classic RS detail.

The pedals, the footrest, the air vents, the MMI buttons and many other controls feature a gleaming aluminum-look finish. Chrome clasps encircle the power window buttons and the seat adjustment switches. Aluminum inlays adorn the door sill trims, which like the head restraints, the steering wheel, the instrument cluster and the gear selector lever are accentuated with RS4 logos.

The Audi RS4 Avant is a sports car with very practical talents for everyday use. Depending on the position of the rear seatbacks, its luggage compartment has a capacity of 490 to 1,430 liters (17.30 to 50.50 cubic feet), and the roof rails are standard. Optional equipment includes a rail system with load-securing set and a power rear hatch.

Equipment and trim

The new Audi RS4 Avant will roll into dealerships in fall 2012, with a base price in Germany of €76,600. Standard equipment includes the parking system plus, automatic air conditioning, the concert CD radio with eight speakers, folding rear seats including a load-through hatch, and an extensive package of safety features and restraint systems. This includes six airbags, the integral Audi head restraint system and Isofix anchor points for child safety seats in the rear.

There is also a wide range of comfort and convenience options. These include the convenience key, adaptive light, high-beam assistant, panoramic tilting sunroof, three-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning, tinted rear windows, shades for the side rear windows and a storage package.

Audi offers all of the assistance systems from the A4 model series for the new RS4 Avant. The driver information system with rest recommendation function (standard) detects when the driver is getting tired. Adaptive cruise control keeps the car at a set distance from the car ahead.

At speeds below 30 km/h (18.64 mph), it initiates a full brake application in the event of an impending collision. Audi side assist uses rearward-facing radar sensors to make changing lanes safer, Audi lane assist uses slight steering interventions to help the driver to stay in the lane and the parking system plus with reversing camera facilitates maneuvering.

A wide range of multimedia components is also available. The top-of-the-line system is MMI navigation plus, a control and navigation center with a large hard drive, a DVD drive, a 7-inch color monitor with 3D graphics and whole-word destination input. Hi-fi fans can order the Bang & Olufsen Sound System, which sends 505 watts of power to 14 speakers.

The ideal complement to MMI navigation plus is the Bluetooth online car phone, which uses a UMTS module to connect the Audi RS4 Avant to the Internet. Passengers can surf the web freely with their mobile devices via the integrated WLAN hotspot. For the driver, the system delivers tailored online services from Audi connect to the car - from Audi online traffic information to navigation with images from Google Earth to the new web radio Audi music stream.
